Vermont Access to Reproductive Freedom,a fund that provides financial assistance to people seeking abortion, received a “completely record-breaking” surge in donations since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last Friday, a board member said.

Since the Supreme Court eliminated the nationwide right to have an abortion, Vermont Access to Reproductive Freedom has received over $100,000 in donations, according to Vermont Access board member Catherine Coteus.

That figure represents an unprecedented sum for the small nonprofit organization.

“(This) has never happened for our organization,” Coteus said in an interview. “Not even close. I think the most money we've ever had in our bank account has been like $20k.”

For Vermont Access to Reproductive Freedom, which is the state’s only abortion fund, according to Coteus, that anger translated to direct donations.

Abortion funds across the country have reported a surge in donations, as many Americans seek to support abortion rights in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling. The National Network of Abortion Funds raised over $3 million on Friday alone, according to The New York Times.

The organization has no paid employees and is run by a board of about 10 volunteers.

“Basically, what happens is we make some money, we raise some money, and then people call us, and we give it all away,” Coteus said. “And then we’re out of money.”

It’s not clear what Vermont Access will do with its windfall of donations. Usually the group receives between 40 and 60 calls a year from people seeking abortions, although volunteers expect those numbers to rise as people from other states — where abortion rights are restricted — seek abortions in Vermont.
