A surge in political spending by organisations funded by hardline supporters of Israel, led by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac), has reshaped Democratic primaries over recent months even though debate about the country rarely figures as a major issue in the elections.
Critics accuse Aipac and its allies of distorting Democratic politics in part because much of the money used to influence primary races comes from billionaire Republicans.
Aipac has spent $6m on Tuesdays contest in Maryland, more than any other organisation, to oppose Donna Edwards, who served eight years as the first Black woman elected to Congress from Maryland before losing a bid for the Senate in 2016.

(36,421 posts)If I wasn't so lazy I'd go and track it down, but it mentioned that for most American voters the I/P conflict doesn't even rate.
And let's get real here. When AIPAC and other extreme RW groups describe themselves as being 'pro-Israel', they're not. They should label themselves more honestly as being 'anti-democracy' as they're not seeing a vision of Israel as a democracy. They're looking at a state where the West Bank and Gaza are annexed and the Palestinians are subjugated and don't get to vote in Israeli elections. ..
For those of you who do support Israel and want to support liberal groups, here's a link to J Street. https://jstreet.org/
