Disabled New Yorkers Face Off With MTA Over Dropped Mask Mandate

https://www.thecity.nyc/2022/9/22/23367068/disabled-advocate-mask-mandate-mta-covid-transportation

The MTA announced on Sept. 7 that New Yorkers could now choose to wear a mask or not on public transit, lifting the requirement on subways, buses and Access-A-Ride vehicles after the mandate was ended by Gov. Kathy Hochul the same day.

New subway and bus signs and the MTA’s social media accounts encouraged but no longer insisted on masking, telling riders “You Do You” and reusing the images from earlier signs showing the proper way to wear a mask.

But immunocompromised New Yorkers say that messaging is confusing and a danger to their health.

At the MTA’s board meeting on Wednesday, several advocates for New Yorkers with disabilities spoke out against the lifting of the mask mandate on public transportation.

Joe Rappaport, the executive director of Brooklyn Center for Independence of the Disabled, shared the story of a woman named Lisa Smid during his comments to emphasize the importance of masking for immunocompromised and disabled transit riders.

I prefer to avoid the "comfort" of long covid &/or a ventilator.

Wtf is srong with these people?

Dunno about you, but I cannot imagine sharing unmasked air space with others anytime soon.

it's all about THEM - that's how they base their decisions - other people are simply not a factor

She hadn't yet seen me, so I said "who the heck still wears a mask?"

She whirled around, clearly ready to stomp the dumbass who asked such an asinine question, when she saw that I was also masked.

Then she laughed brightly and said "can't be too safe."

I completely agree with her.

Covid aside, I haven't caught a cold since the pandemic began, and I attribute this to dedicated mask use and more careful hand washing & sanitizing. I'm in no hurry to abandon the mask.

Good for you both!

I get strange looks because I wear NIOSH certified ones with 2 straps over head.

Haven't had covid yet. 🤞

Don't give a dayum about the looks I get.

Two days ago I got an alert on my phone saying I should sign up for COVID alerts in MA. Point, we are still considered a red zone.
