Seems closer to ? 60 - 40.
60%- Dems, Dem learning Indpdnt
40%- Reps, Rep leaning Indpdnt
Obviously it's even more complex & nuanced -
Though I'd say Libertarians usually go w Reps much,
most? of the time.
The non voters etc

And there are also millions more votes for Democratic senators than republicons.

(4,845 posts)Unless we have proportional representation based on the number of votes gotten (we clearly don't), the total make up number means nothing when a district with 10 people has the same number of representative as a district with 50 million.

(25,342 posts)I also think we habitually underestimate the politically disengaged. I think it's more like 40%. Most of them just lean one way or the other already.
I also think it's closer to 50/50 (including leaners) than we often wish to acknowledge.

(64,420 posts)Where we diverge is that the vote totals don't suggest 50:50.
In 2014 & 2016, the Rs controlled the house, but nationwide under 44% of all votes cast.
The senate is trickier because of the lack of proportion, but a 50:50 Senate was the result of dems getting (over 3 elections) 62% of the vote.
So, I actually think it's closer to 60/40 than 50/50.

(64,420 posts)Pew & Gallup both got the same value.
It's accurate, however, to say the indies tend to lean R more than D.
It's what keeps elections close.
