NEW YORK (AP) Chuck Todd said Sunday hell be leaving Meet the Press after a tumultuous near-decade of moderating the NBC political panel show, to be replaced in the coming months by Kristen Welker.Todd, 51, told viewers that Ive watched too many friends and family let work consume them before it was too late and that hed promised his family he wouldnt do that.
Todd has often been an online punching bag for critics during a polarized time, and there were rumors that his time at the show would be short when its executive producer was reassigned at the end of last summer. Its unclear when Todds last show will be, but he told viewers that this would be his final summer.
I leave feeling concerned about this moment in history but reassured by the standards weve set here, Todd said. We didnt tolerate propagandists and this network and program never will.
Welker, a former chief White House correspondent, has been at NBC News in Washington since 2011 and has been Todds chief fill-in for the past three years. She drew praise for moderating the final presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden in 2020.

(42,676 posts)Work was going to consume him? We should have been so lucky. Too lazy to ask follow up questions. A legacy of ho-hum journalism. He let MTP guests hoodwink America.

I can never recall a single instance when she was appropriately critical, skeptical, NOT hyper credulous, and/or not engaging in intense "bothsiderism."
I suspect your celebrations will be short-lived. As much as I want to celebrate a woman in that role, Welker sadly is very likely going to reinforce past (but not forgotten) stereotypes of overly compliant, easily intimidated women in that position. Yes, I remember her moderation of the last Presidential debate mentioned here, but I think the laudatory assessment was the result of an intensely low bar.

I was skeptical about Psaki at first, but shes done a great job. Never liked Welker - too much bothsiderism and absolutely no personality.

(80,700 posts)I always felt that Russert was way too impressed with himself. And maybe its a Meet the Press disease. I havent liked ANYBODY in that hosting position. But Russert was the worst! He was so damn cocky! Look at ME in this huge important influential job! And look at how in with the in crowd I am - more than you can ever hope to be! Its about ME ME ME!!!
I dont miss Tim Russert. And I wonder if maybe we need a different approach to the Sunday news shows. Theyre not there to be star vehicles!

(127,316 posts)since Russert went bye bye (meaning some 15 years ago). But what happened was when they brought Gregory on, they started simulcasting the show on their radio affiliates, which meant that the garden show that I used to listen to on Sundays, had 2 of its 3 hours preempted and then they eventually ditched the gardening show altogether.

I found this guy a few months ago and hes worth a follow.
Chuck Todd was awful when he was on C-SPAN years ago. His what about ism was full-blown then and I just couldnt believe it when he jumped to MSNBC.
Good riddance to Chuck and his shamble bangs.
