been on treatment, including active and maintenance and relapses, for 8 years. It doesn’t necessarily require stopping work at all. Were I in Congress, apart from time for medical appts, I’d have been able to work just fine.

There can certainly be tough cases, but myeloma for many people is a non-curable, but manageable, blood cancer.

That said, yeah I’d be fine if he quit work

dx’ed has been amazing hasn’t it, and his dx was a year earlier than mine.

My local oncologist who administers treatment, and got her Fellowship working alongside my specialist, said when she was doing her residency at Harvard, myeloma was almost an automatic death sentence - and she’s definitely not old!

Sounds like your husband has gotten excellent care, and may he continue responding to treatments for many many more years

**** I **** have NO IDEA what he deserves. For all I know, the universe may decide he deserves to win powerball, or be nominated for sainthood, or healed of that pernicious cancer. NOT MY CALL. It fascinates me that so many people don't bother to understand the actual benediction. It speaks to an interesting mindset.

multiple myeloma for 8 years and have been tolerating it well. It’s not the death sentence it used to be and is incurable yes, but manageable. There are remarkable new treatments that have come online since my dx - the landscape has changed for many patients.

It seems to me he's a despicable Republican in every way.

I had a college girlfriend who had a dad much like Scalise on the surface, possibly worse behind closed doors.

When he died of a similar affliction nobody was sad.

This can be a devastating disease - or it can be manageable. It's considered incurable - but manageable. By that it needs to not do terrific damage to bones or kidneys.

No fan of Scalise but I'd never wish cancer on anyone. There's also no need for him to step down or focus on family. Initial treatment typically consists of a weekly subq shot and a pill. My husband managed to continue to work with no issues. A year later he had a stem cell transplant - which were his own stem cells. Probably will be in Scalise's future as well. That does have some recovery time and my husband did work only part time after that - but he was 68 at the time and that was in his future anyway.

If Scalise responds well to treatment - he can keep on. My husband's first remission lasted 5 years. He's had a few progressions since then and a few different treatments. One called CarT used his own t-cells and reengineered them and put them back in his body. That gave him 18 months with no treatments at all. He relapsed again in May and is now on another treatment that's working well.

For anyone receiving this - or any serious illness diagnosis - I wish them nothing but the best. My hope for Scalise is that he recognizes through this ordeal the importance of Medicare For All and negotiated drug prices. But I don't hold out any real hope for that.

hero when it comes to living with incurable cancer. And it hasn't stopped us from traveling and living and having adventures. Thank goodness he has two amazing specialists in charge of his care and that Medicare has never questioned any treatment they recommend. When he was on pill treatment - he had to get grants from various organizations just to pay the copays (anywhere from $600-900 a month for 21 pills and that's with prescription insurance) - but that's another story. . .
