Trump to Woo Striking Union Members in Detroit, Skipping 2nd G.O.P. Debate
Looking past the Republican primary, Donald Trump and his campaign are already gearing up for a possible rematch with President Biden Former President Donald Trump is planning to address an audience of more than 500 union workers in Detroit next Wednesday instead of participating in the next Republican primary debate.Credit...Shuran Huang for The New York Times By Shane Goldmacher and Maggie Haberman Sept. 18, 2023 Updated 5:57 p.m. ET https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/18/us/politics/trump-detroit-debate.html "SNIP.......... Former President Donald J. Trump is planning to travel to Detroit on the day of the next Republican primary debate, according to two Trump advisers with knowledge of the plans, injecting himself into the labor dispute between striking autoworkers and the nation’s leading auto manufacturers. The trip, which will include a prime-time speech before current and former union members, is the second consecutive primary debate that Mr. Trump is skipping to instead hold his own counterprogramming. He sat for an interview with the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson that posted online during the first G.O.P. presidential debate in August. ................. In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” broadcast over the weekend, Mr. Trump was critical of Mr. Fain, saying workers had been “sold down the river by their leadership.” “I don’t know the gentleman, but I know his name very well, and I think he’s not doing a good job in representing his union,” Mr. Trump said. “Because he’s not going to have a union in three years from now. Those jobs are all going to be gone, because all of those electric cars are going to be made in China.” .........SNIP" Applegrove: so the first thing Trump does for union workers striking is try to instill fear in them. Good job Trump ![]()

1. His gripe is about the shift to EVs. He's going to make this about how the gov't
is ruining everything right now and that he is going to fix it without anything to back it up.

2. EVs will cost union jobs.
1) It takes far fewer workers to make an EV compared with a gas vehicle. There are fewer parts to put together.
2) Automakers are moving their EV plants to non-union states and out of country. The major automakers already lose billions on their EV vehicles. They are not going to do things that cost even more. |

3. Who is going to tell Trump Michigan is set to lead the country in EV battery manufacturing
And that is in part because US auto companies are ramping up production of EV cars in the USA.
This gas guzzling, fossil fuel loving, scared of alternate energy, bullshit might play to other audiences, but the UAW knows US manufacturers will be making lots of money here in the US producing EV vehicles. The UAW wants, and rightly deserves, some of those future profits. Hope Trump completely short circuits and reverts to his pat complaining about the US government saving the auto industry. |

4. Sure the U.S. taxpayer bailed out your companies
And they spent $66 billion buying back their own stock, so you can see how with booming profits Ford, GM and Usetabee Chrysler just don't have any money to pay you folks more. Just be thankful you have a job!
Thank you, Mr. Trump, for that inspiring message. |
