Today, Vice President Harris is giving the keynote speech at the American Federation of Teachers national convention, highlighting Democrats commitment to delivering for educators, parents, and students across the nation.
The Biden-Harris administration is taking historic action to cut costs for thousands of hardworking teachers; make the largest ever investment in public education in American history; and expand access to tutoring, mental health care, and afterschool learning.
In stark contrast, Donald Trumps dangerous Project 2025 agenda will quite literally dismantle Americas public education system.
Trump and Project 2025 are openly committed to gutting public education funding and abolishing the Department of Education.
Trump: Well be able to cut [spending on] education in half and get much better education in some of the states.
Trump promised, I will not give one penny to any school that has a vaccine mandate, meaning that he will cut federal funding for every public school in the country.

Education Week: Project 2025, a 900-page conservative policy agenda that proposes eliminating the U.S. Department of Education
Trumps catastrophic Project 2025 plans will eliminate the Department of Education; cut nearly $20 billion from local school districts, hundreds of millions of dollars from rural education, and tens of billions of dollars from students; and threaten billions in funding for students with disabilities.
Trumps Project 2025 will eliminate the Head Start program.
Eliminating Head Start will rip away critical resources like preschool from nearly a million impoverished children and pregnant women.
Trumps plan to eliminate Head Start will disproportionately hurt Black and Latino families, and nearly 80 percent of Americans believe this would hurt the country.
Trump will put more guns into the classroom.
Trump has called for the elimination of gun-free school zones and will use taxpayer dollars to arm teachers.
Trump asserted that massacres of schoolchildren are not a gun problem and said that Iowans mourning the murder of a sixth grade student have to get over it.
Harris for President Spokesperson Joseph Costello released the following statement:
Donald Trumps extreme Project 2025 agenda will dismantle public schools and the very principle that every child should have their shot at the American dream. That means laid off teachers, shuttered schools, and less support for kids and their families. Trump has promised to gut funding for students by billions of dollars, abolish the Department of Education, and jack up costs on hardworking teachers and low income families all while giving handouts to corporations and billionaires. As if those schemes werent dangerous enough, Trump will also inject guns and his far-right propaganda into the classroom. There is one candidate in this race with a record and vision that supports educators, parents, and students Vice President Harris.

(19,348 posts)With the outsourcing of auto jobs, the American Federation of Teachers has become a predominate donor to the Democratic Party.
It's obviously an act of survival for the union, but the republicans overlook that, claiming it's a far left organization that has to go.
George Bush's "No Child Left Behind" was the most blatant move to that end by granting tuition to parents who don't want their kids in an urban city school. Homeschooling and Christian academies surged in the years following. Public schools, faced with smaller classroom attendance began closing struggling schools, furloughing union teachers. Everybody now has a building closed, repurposed, or demolished in their community, while 2nd rate non-union schools sprouted in strip malls.
When the union is satisfactorily defeated, they will pull the rug out from the tuitions, leaving poorer communities with few options. Wealthy districts can pass a levy to refund their schools or pay for a private school, but urban areas will suffer the most. The GOP dream is to supply the best education you can afford.
