The day the music died...

54 years ago today.

Buddy, Ritchie and the Bopper boarded a Beechcraft Bonanza to get to their next gig - avoiding a grueling, freezing bus trip.. The bus made it. The Bonanza did not.

Thank you Buddy, Ritchie and JD. Your trip was truncated, but your legend will never be so.

I was a senior in HS and played on the basketball team. We came back to the school on the bus from a Tuesday afternoon game and my sister was there to drive me home and she told me about the plane crash.

I don't remember being affected by the news. I was much happier that we won the game and I got some rebounds and blocked a few shots but years later when "American Pie" came out, that was what I remembered and for some reason I've never forgotten it since.

Valens. I even liked the Big Bopper. It was the first time I'd been affected by a sudden death of people whom I really liked, though I didn't know them personally. Also, the fact that it happened just after they left the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake made it very personal to us. It's where we went during the summers and we had been bummed that we couldn't go to see them because it was winter and during the school week.

I thought they'd been forgotten until American Pie came out. I loved the song immediately and have loved it ever since.

Also known as Richy Valenzuela...(it sounded to Mexican so he shortened it to Valens)
All of these from my teenage years.

I recall "The day the music died". I was young enough -- only 10 -- that it didn't have as strong an impact at that time as it has since. Buddy Holly's influence on popular music is almost impossible to calculate. Had he lived, he would have made the Beatles seem like minor players. In his short time he completely changed things, and younger people, say anyone born after 1970, simply have no idea.

All three of those killed that day might still be alive, had the crash not happened. Buddy Holly would be 76, Ritchie Valens 71, and the Big Bopper 82. Just imagine
