(85,919 posts). . . what the threshold is for refusing a suspect bail. The circumstances here would seem to me to be a slam-dunk for no-bail.

(85,919 posts). . . dude kidnapped three women and subjected them to repeated assaults. No ambiguity about whether he is involved . . . I do understand that the judge isn't stupid enough to put bail within his reach, but I wonder why the system allows someone in this particular circumstance even a remote chance at freedom?

I think the situation would be different had the police found an arsenal of explosives, or a well-worn passport(s) or if they believed there was some group of sympathetic friends/relatives who would help him flee...
Although given the notoriety and high profile of the case, I'm very surprised bail was offered...

(5,762 posts)I don't like the thoughts I am thinking right now. And I would guess others, closer to this case, are thinking them too.
He would not be safe outside of prison walls. Not that I think he deserves the safety of same, but keeping him alive might yield some information of value that could prevent these crimes in the future, or offer clues into the pathology of monstrosity.
After they've exhausted any usefulness he might have, they can kill him. <--I have never said this before in a DU post. I hope I never have to say it again.

(16,038 posts)but believe the victims shouldn't have to die for the punishment for the crime to exceed the penalty for murder..if the death penalty applies to anything, it should be for monsters like this..there are worse things than death..too bad we can't find one for these assholes to enjoy for the remainder of their miserable existences..

(16,038 posts)has something they call "supermax"..don't know how it compares to ADX Florence..I interviewed several ADX Florence prisoners a number of years ago..they were far more content with their lot in life than these assholes deserve to ever be...maybe life in maximum security gen pop would be more fun for them..solitary confinement = safety..they should never feel safe again, I'm sure their victims will not..

(5,762 posts)But...even the most compassionate and empathic among us (and I'm nowhere near that) eventually discover the point beyond which they cannot go.
As a humanist, I can find no compassion in my heart for this person. I'm not proud of that.
I'm also not a big slinger-around of the "E" word ("EVIL" , but I am making another exception here.
I cannot imagine that this person has any redeeming feature that would make it worth preserving his life. None at all. Glad I don't have to sit in the judge's chair on this one.

(14,400 posts)don't allow courts to refuse bail so they make it impossible for the defendant to actually get it. At 2,000,000 per charge I don't think this guy is actually even going to meet with a bonding company.
