Woman upset TV from Walmart wouldn't work

MARIN CITY, Calif. (KGO) -- Imagine you bought an expensive big screen TV and it simply didn't work. That's what happened to a Marin County woman who says her TV came from the store already broken.

Flat screen TVs give you great pictures but the slightest crack can disable the entire set and most warranties won't cover cracked screens. This woman says her brand new TV cracked coming out of the box, but the warranty didn't cover a repair and she couldn't return it to the store.

Snip:

She contacted 7 On Your Side and we contacted Walmart and two weeks later, the retailer gave her a call. "They said, 'So what's going on with your TV?'" said Barnes.

Walmart agreed to take back the TV and provide a full refund. A Walmart spokesperson said it was not clear what caused the cracks, but: "This is not the experience we want our customers to have. Ultimately we did the right thing by taking care of Ms. Barnes and resolved the issue with her."

Really love the "Ultimately we did the right thing" comment, like they couldn't have done this from the start?

1. the phrase "cracked coming out of the box" is a bit unclear

Possibly bad reporting - but if she cracked the screen by not being careful as she was unloading the TV, than she would be on the hook? I don't know.

3. Everyone knows you don't tell the truth about something like that!

If she said she broke it, why would Wal-Mart dispute her?

4. Possible that she did damage the unit unpacking it

it's also possible it was damaged when packed, warehoused or transported, hard to say with concealed damaged.

5. yeah - that's the issue - but since they replaced the TV I guess they made a determination.

9. I saw that too, but . . . . .

. . . . If the thing is poorly packed or, more likely, so intricately packed, it is possible to break something like that accidentally. The lesson here ought o go back to the manufacturer.

All the above is speculation. It could have broken in shipment, been broken from the factory, or the purchaser may have been a world class klutz.

2. I've been in the back of Walmart trucks.

Everything is stacked indiscriminately with many avalanches of general merchandise as you empty it.

23. In your opinion perhaps, however

it was her money and her choice. I do not believe calling someone "stupid" or an "idiot" adds to the debate.

17. i don't watch tv

unless i visit people.

almost every house i seem to go to, they seem to have one on.

but it largely depends on social class: self-actualized, intelligent people and very wealthy people don't often sit in front of the tv drooling. nor is there one CONSTANTLY on, even when guests are present.

your average run-of-the-mill workerbot or cube drone - not so much.

18. Indeed.

When I grew up we went to the theater if we wanted entertainment to watch the live action entertainment and throw tomatoes at the bad actors. Huzzah! Great fun. Of course you couldn't go out with turkeys on your feet, you'd look like a fool. You need an onion for your belt.

20. If she was dumb enough to say she broke it, I can understand some mid-level employee...

...saying 'Sorry, not our fault.'

Of course a truly reputable company would replace it no questions asked. But she probably put a wrench in the works when she said it was her fault.

"...cracked coming out of the box..." is the key phrase.

28. I had a problem like this when I bought by first PS2

it didn't work out of the box but I took it back to Best Buy and they had no problem exchanging it for another one. I don't know if it was a manufacturing defect or it was dropped in the warehouse or something but it didn't work when I took it out of the box.

34. We bought a flat screen from WalMart and TWO came broken (screen cracked)

and WalMart had no problem with taking them back and replacing them FREE of charge to us...they were delivered and not picked up...

So I am not sure why this woman had a problem, except she said she caused the crack...
