GOP anxiety grows over Ga. Senate race

Republicans are increasingly concerned about Georgia's Senate race, where a crowded primary threatens to produce a flawed candidate who could put at risk a seat in a Republican-leaning state.

Recent polling shows the two candidates Republicans are most anxious about — Reps. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) and Paul Broun (R-Ga.) — leading the pack. Whoever emerges from the clown-car primary, with seven candidates and counting, will face a candidate Democrats are high on in a state where shifting demographics benefit their party.

Losing Georgia's open Senate seat would do severe damage to Republicans' hopes of winning the net of six seats necessary to take control of the Senate.

“Gingrey has a history of making some gaffes, and Broun it seems like it's a gaffe every other day. Those are the two that worry Republicans the most as potential problems going into the general election,” said Georgia Republican strategist Joel McElhannon, who’s neutral in the race.

I am sorta wondering what counts as a "gaffe" in Republican world, because it is pretty obvious that straight up lying does NOT.

I want to see republicans in Georgia do plenty of debates and be forced to answer lots of reporter's questions. Sunshine is lethal to republicans.

Changes in the state act in her favor. President Obama ran close to Romney in the state and may have won it had his campaign expended time and resources there. Even in historically conservative states voters are tiring of the crazy, this is especially the case when old voters are dying off and being replaced by voters that don't think like them. Republicans in states like Georgia will soon find that they can win district races, but can't win statewide - that day is coming. Efforts like the one by former Mississippi Governor Ronny Musgrave in several southern states and by Jeremy Bird in Texas and Arizona will ultimately turn those states blue as voters in those states recognize how badly they have screwed themselves for decades.

'Non-profit CEO Michelle Nunn (D), the daughter of former Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), has a clear Democratic field and is positioning herself as an economically centrist problem-solver. While she’s an untested candidate Democrats are excited about her profile, and she ran slightly ahead of or even with every Republican in a recent poll conducted by the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling."

Hope Georgia and Kentucky get two new Democratic Women Senators!

daughter of a Senator - ugh
economically centrist - double ugh

I wish the Democratic Party would get away from their election formula of 1) candidate who is rich and/or famous and 2) economic conservatism

give the house to one of those republicans, because there is no way that a "left" candidate ever gets elected in Georgia (at least in the foreseeable future).

There is no such thing as an economic progressive who is electable state-wide south of the mason-dixon line.

if we market our message we should be able to sell it to the voters - a majority of the voters. Represent the bottom 80% and win the majority of that bottom 80%.

At least I would like to see the party TRY it.

And consider this.

Gore lost Georgia by 11.69%
Kerry lost Georgia by 16.6%

Gore lost South Dakota by 22.3%
Kerry lost South Dakota by 21.47%

South Dakota is at least as red as Georgia and yet one of the most liberal Senators ever - George McGovern won 3 statewide elections there.

Since the Democratic Party refuses to even run economically liberal candidates, then basically when it comes to economics, the voters don't have a real choice. Democrat, Republican, either way it is a conservative that does NOT represent the bottom 80%.

Here's hoping the worst Teabaggers wins the primary. I like to think that there are enough voters even in GA who have concluded that the GOP is unhinged.

I would be gratified to see Saxby Chambliss' time in office bookended by. Democrats.
