White, meanwhile, had his own criticism for the hacker group Anonymous, saying that authorities had detected a "pretty credible threat" that someone had attempted to infiltrate the Sheriff's Department's computer server, forcing the department to temporarily take it down.
"They are truly a bunch of cowards, hiding behind--even their name, 'Anonymous.' What do you do with people like that?" he said. "They all need to get jobs and quit living with their parents."

Dear Sheriff White,
YOU don't DO anything with Anonymous.
However, you are going to find out what they can do with you.
Hope you enjoy the ride.

(149,296 posts)Disgusting how this case was "handled" before Anonymous got involved.
The whole community of Maryville just makes me sick.

(27,275 posts)The Coleman family has denied that anyone ever invoked their right not to testify or refused to answer questions, but County Sheriff Darren White also said witnesses' failure to cooperate had hampered the investigation.
The prosecutor went after this with a fervor," White told The Times. "It was only when the victims refused to cooperate and assist in this case that he ultimately had to drop the case."
Before the charges were dropped, White said, Daisy twice invoked her 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination and declined to answer questions about the alleged rape. A 13-year-old girl who also was allegedly raped during the same incident "never showed up any time," White said.
Daisy Coleman appeared Tuesday on CNN with her mother, who denied any refusal to cooperate. We did not refuse to testify with the felony case, we were not given any information about it, and we were not asked to testify," she said.

(13,458 posts)I would bet he threatened to throw the book at poor Daisy for underage drinking or something if she didn't drop the charges then said she was "uncooperative". Just pure conjecture on my part, but it appears that the primary motive for any "investigation" was to find a way to get the boy off the hook because of his preferred athlete status and his Grandfather's power in the community.

(23,272 posts)The Sheriff and DA said the girls wouldn't go forward with the case, but their decision to go public at such a breathtakingly young age, indicates to me that they were more than willing to proceed.
The situation in Marysville needed exposure. That's not vigilantism. Its called getting information out to the public to resolve the impasse.

(3,891 posts)The Victim and family were essentially run out of town, and then the house they had for sale in town was burned, the fire marshal said the instability of the structure made it impossible to conduct an investigation, the official cause is "undertermined".
Personally, If I was half as rich as the Rethugs, I'd buy billboards just outside of town, and post the information on them to let the motorists know to buy their gas in another town. With a little luck, the entire town would join Dodge City as a Ghost Town in a couple years.

(34,845 posts)For all we know, everything occurred the way the Sheriff says it did -witnesses refused to testify. Anonymous is not the possessor of 'secret knowledge' the rest of the world cannot obtain.
It could also be a cover-up. But no one outside that town knows a damned thing. It's all conjecture.

(23,272 posts)And you believe the Sheriff? Why?
If the girls are unafraid to tell their story on national teevee, what could possibly lead you to believe they'd be unwilling to go to trial?

(10,559 posts)the DAs office decided not to prosecute.
In defense of this Sheriff, he is "law enforcement" and if he is a good person (which I have seen no evidence to the contrary), he is going to be against "Law Breakers" of all stripes (even Anonymous).
ON EDIT: I read a different article where the sheriff's department had obtained confessions - this article does not focus on that.
Personally, while I support "Anonymous" (especially in this case - thank you, Anonymous!), I respect a principled stand like that of the Sheriff.
And if the world was a perfect place, and the family of the victim had seen justice, we wouldn't need Anonymous.
And I will appreciate both of the groups as appropriate.
