The Washington Post just posted their final poll of the Virginia campaign (9/22 results in parenthesis):
Governor
McAuliffe (D) 51 (47)
Cuccinelli (R) 39 (39)
Lt Gov
Northam (D) 52 (45)
Jackson (R) 39 (42)
Attorney General
Herring (D) 49 (45)
Obenshain (R) 46 (42)
Democratic Party: 50 fav, 48 unfav
Republican Party: 32 fav, 65 unfav
Virginia voters have had one of the clearest contrasts between candidates imaginable: Terry McAuliffe running an explicitly liberal campaign, and Ken Cuccinelli running a hardcore conservative one. It's what both bases have been demanding, and both candidates have delivered.
Only one side will emerge next Tuesday validated, and it looks like it will be our side. And it's not just the governor's race, but the lieutenant governor's and attorney's general races as well. And it's not just them, either. Look at those party numbers! They point to big gains in the legislature, which is why we're pushing hard for our mini-slate of state lege candidates.

(39,961 posts)when the woman that was a witch ran on the "outlaw masturbation" idea and lost what was supposed to be a solid Republican seat got her behind handed to her that they would have learned. But no, trust conservatives to do the same thing over and over again with the same results and just think "we need to do it more this time".

(8,377 posts)Virginia has been one of the states trying electoral dirty tricks. McAuliffe should be able to completely shut that down even without a blue legislature. This could take VA out of the swing state category altogether. If VA had not been considered in play down the stretch in 2012, the press would not have been able to play that out as a close horse race.
If we can solidify WI, OH, PA, and MI, there will simply be no way for a Republican to win the WH unless there is a huge disparity in the quality of candidates.

(9,490 posts)for certain states. Virginia is one of those states. Their plan was to issue the electoral votes by congressional district. Since the districts are gerrymandered, the net effect was the minority candidate would receive about 75% of the electoral votes. A Democratic governor would be able to veto that law.

(8,377 posts)That's another reason why the 2014 elections are very important. I think Corbett is up for re-election in 2014.

(39,961 posts)for a large number of families in the state. When they shut down the government, they screwed over VA families, and those people vote. It's no wonder poll numbers plummeted. They peed in the face of the electorate that voted them in office with the shut down.

(43,879 posts)Over the past 20 years, Virginia has established itself as a solidly purple state when it comes to statewide elections. Republicans George Allen and Jim Gilmore cruised to victory in 1993 and 1997. Then Mark Warner and Tim Kaine turned things around for the Democrats in 2001 and 2005. And then Republican Bob McDonnell crushed the Democratic Party candidate, Creigh Deeds in 2009.
It looks like McCauliffe is set to take the statehouse back for the Democrats in 2013. But it hardly signifies that the state has become a blue state. Typically, when the repubs field a candidate who is not a scary crazy guy, their candidate gets between 56 and 58 percent of the vote. The best that the Democrats typically are able to do is around 52 percent. There is clearly a swing vote of around 8-10 percent that determines the elections and they are less driven by party identification than by whether the candidate seems "moderate" to them.
The repubs have shot themselves in the foot a couple of times now by selecting their nominees via convention rather than primary, thus empowering the crazies to control the decision. If this year's governor's race turns out the way it appears it will turn out, there is likely to be a civil war within the Virginia republican party. If the more "moderate' (and I use that term advisedly when referring to repubs) group, represented by someone like former Lieutenant Governor Bolling, prevails, the party will be competitive again. But if not, then the nutjobs will continue to scare away the swing voters. Let's just be thankful the nutjogs got their way for this election. A Bolling/McCauliffe race would look much much different I suspect.

(8,377 posts)We cannot ever take anything for granted. But the population growth is clearly in the DC area, and this is a lot more Democratic than the rest of the state. So I think that shift already was moving things our direction. Unless there is a big disparity in candidates (Presidential and Senators), this should be at least deep, deep purple going forward. The Congressional delegation and the state legislature is a different matter.

(2,825 posts)We still have a Democrat in that position here in NC. According to polls, he will probably be our next Governor.
We also still have Democrats in the positions of Secretary of State and Treasurer.
Keep up the good work, Virginians. Keep it going!

(2,397 posts)Was trying to think of another election somewhere, but I may be confusing it with Booker who just won.
But the other thought is, this may be an indication of how badly the tea freaks--and Cruz--pissed off "Indy" voters by shutting down the country.
I just hope this carries over till next year to the point "D's" win Texas.

(794 posts)does virginia use diebold voting machines? It would be pretty easy to steal the VA election and use it to claim additional, non polling support. And teabaggers have no moral compunctions about usurping democratic choice.

(43,879 posts)I don't know the technical term but they use a paper ballot that you fill out (by filling in circles with a pen) and then feed into a machine. Presumably its some form of scanner, but the paper ballot is preserved.
