Mobile apps overtake PC Internet usage in U.S. ![]() Americans used smartphone and tablet apps more than PCs to access the Internet last month -- the first time that has ever happened. Mobile devices accounted for 55% of Internet usage in the United States in January. Apps made up 47% of Internet traffic and 8% of traffic came from mobile browsers, according to data from comScore, cited Thursday by research firm Enders Analysis. PCs clocked in at 45%. Although total Internet usage on mobile devices has previously exceeded that on PCs, this is the first time it's happened for app usage alone. The shift follows a freefall in PC sales, which suffered their worst decline in history last year. http://money.cnn.com/2014/02/28/technology/mobile/mobile-apps-internet/index.html

1. I love anything Apple
I know some don't so just giving my opinion. It just makes like wonderful. The I-Pad, I-phone, I-pod and my MacPro is all I need. Perfect in everyday. Oh and no more virus'…when I used the PC it constantly got virus'. So glad to be done with those. Yep even if a super duper security…virus'.

3. I prefer my assembled by myself PC, High quality mother board and other components
in a used case with a Linux operating system. I get no viruses, the flexibility of an open source platform. What you had problems with was not the computer, but Microsoft Window's vulnerability to viruses and other malware. I'm glad you like your Apple products, but your argument predicated on an operating system that is a target as it is the most widely used has nothing to do with how good the hardware of a quality PC is with a Linux OS installed.

8. Except for my laptop ALL my computers are home builds.
I run everything from XP, XP X64, 7 Pro X64, and 8(highly tweaked) to Mint 16 XFCE depending on what I use that computer for.

12. I would never use Windows, Linux is on balance a vastly preferable OS.
I build computers on a volunteer basis for Free Greek (Freegeek.com) from donated machines many of which are given out in grants.
Windows is unnecessary when there are better open source choices out there. |

13. I fix them for a living and you have to know something about the vast majority of Win PCs.
And some things there aren't any good Linux apps or even work well under an emulator.

14. Which will continue to be so until more people are using Linux.
I have an activist's focus on it and encourage people to avoid the corporate products which have there own nasty faults to them. I have one dual boot machine which I can use Windoz on if I need it. But the multiboot aspect of that lappie (my only store bought machine) hasn't been used in a long while. I definitely would not boot up the MS product down at Free Geek with it; I would ruffle some feathers there in that MS free zone.

7. What's a virus? Haven't seen a virus on my computer in 10 years.
Most viruses are caused by the ID ten T error. And I can build 3 PCs for the cost of 1 Mac

5. When they come up with a tablet or smartphone with a 26" screen I'll swap
Going backwards in screen size is almost physically painful.

15. 22" here.
While I can technically access 3G internet on my $14.99 flip-phone, I've never tried as it would not be usable for me.

6. Of course a PC can be used for working without accessing the internet.
But just about every app on a smartphone does even if you're not actually on the internet at the time.

9. 90% of my web viewing is done via mobile device or tablet...
I utilize a notebook pc out of necessity or else I'd probably be closer to 100%.

10. The desktop has reached maturity.
This is not a bad thing. It is if you are only focused on blockbusteritis and throw-away consumption though.
The internet of 2014 is not the internet of 1997. Today it is more like an extension of TV married to AOL on steroids. Given how many homes have multiple TV's, why would I be surprised to hear that more mobile devices accessed the internet? But, 'desktop' PC's (i.e. workstations, servers, laptops, etc.) are still the go to device for creation and serving of content whereas mobile devices have become the go to device for consumption. Gates and Jobs succeeded in their dreams - the masses are hooked on $2.99 apps that we used to program as kids on our Amiga's, Atari's, and Apple II's. The irony for some of us old enough to remember them, is that iPads and Smartphones & their usages with the 'Cloud' are not that very different than the mainframes and dumb terminals of old. |
