Disney World employees among workers left homeless because they can’t afford to rent

A growing number of families are being forced to live in motels in the theme park playground of central Florida because they cannot afford to buy their own homes.

On any given day, tourists pay nearly $100 per person to get into Orlando's theme parks.

There, they may be waited on by homeless parents. From their hotels, they jog past bus stops where homeless children wait to head to school.

They buy coffee at Starbucks next to the motels that have become families' homes

Starting minimum pay at Walt Disney World - the area's largest employer, just a few miles from the motels - is $8.03 an hour, though that could increase to $10 under a contract being negotiated with the resort's largest union group.

Disneyland the last time I went there 10 years ago, cost like $65.00 for one adult pass. They charge like $2.00 for a can of Coke. In the 90's I had 2 kids with me, and we stopped for lunch. 3 hot dogs chips and soda, over $20.00. And then there's the $10.00 or more parking. And that $65.00 doesn't include admission to California's Adventure Park, Disneyland ONLY. $5.00 for lockers to keep your extra shit in, and these are 10 year old prices. I'm sure it's more now.

And they can't afford to pay their employees more than $8.03 an hour. Even $10.00 is robbery to the employees who have to put up with a lot of shit from assholes from all over the world. And remember, SMILE!

Parking is $16.00. Food hasn't gotten any cheaper either.

Pure corporate greed.

I don't know what happened to that program. WDW needs to raise their minimum wage, badly. They can easily afford to.

more than just poor people. They are hurting small businesses too. We have a lot of vulture landlords who don't even live in this country. Off shore landlords and vulture developers are eating citizens alive. The unintended consequences are far reaching but few in power seem to understand. For one thing, the highest rents are along both coasts and in and near once thriving big cities. It's leaving a blight in the inner cities, overcrowding suburbs, and forcing many people into rural area and the center of the country. That can be good for Dems as the mid-west begins to fill up with younger, and more liberal folks from the coastal areas. The center is where the jobs are moving if not off shore. Soon the demographics in the red states will turn them purple and then blue as the die-hards will die hard or move to the mountains and deserts (hard to vote from there). Much more consequences if you can think about it. Nothing happens in a vacuum ...outrageous rents cost us all in one way or another. Those McMansions will be holding two or three extended families with basement room rentals. It's already happening in the upscale neighborhood nearby...7 cars in the driveway and garage...motorcycles and bikes on the side.

a job in the SF Bay Area. We drove around some neighborhoods in the San Jose area and even then it was obvious that some of the homes were being occupied by large numbers of people- numerous cars in driveways and lining the street.

Husband turned down the job because the salary being offered was completely out of whack with the cost of housing which was high then and is ridiculous now.
