"Though Brat ran significantly to the right of Eric Cantor, blasting the 7-term Congressman for supporting amnesty and being too closely associated with crony capitalism, the issues section of his website is just as vague as his MSNBC interview. Stretching just 871 words, the site is filled with generalities about restoring the relationship between doctor and patient, broad-spectrum energy approach that relies on the free market and ending our reliance on foreign oil.

(16,254 posts)If he also had support, isn't that kind of strange? Or do they just contribute to all the Pugs so they can later pull their puppet strings?

(12,051 posts)loon (I believe his chair at uni was funded by the Kochs). Lots of ppl in this district are out-and-out Christian fundamentalist teabagger morons, and they were tired of Cantor 1) being Jewish and 2) being insufficiently attentive to their idiocies. Don't get me wrong -- Cantor was an insufferable little lying prick and I'm glad he's gone -- but no one should underestimate the craziness of the people who live in this district and in most districts of VA. It ain't purple here, except in small areas of NoVA and Norfolk.
I have no idea whether Brat will do well in the main election. It does depend somewhat on whether Trammel gets any national Dem org support, which no Dem running against Cantor has ever gotten. It will be a litmus test for me; I'll know exactly how the national party feels after I see if they come to Trammel's aid. I suspect they won't -- not in any effective manner anyway. I will then know that the national party thinks this is all a big game and the fact that there are lives/environment/etc in the balance means no more to them than it does to the Republicans. What the dems do in this one race will determine for me forever what my voting pattern will be.

(3,580 posts)Some of the people I know live in the 7th in Henrico cty, Brat got the teabags to come out of hiding in eastern Henrico. I think Brat could get lots of votes from the teabags who have been bashing Cantor for years, I never understood why Cantor thought they thought he was one of them. They hated him before Brat even come along. I thought Powell had a decent chance against Cantor but dems did not support him, I hope they have enough sense to support Trammel.
Neither Brat or Trammel are politicians and will make mistakes, I think Brat could get into trouble because so few people know about him and as he goes around the district and starts talking about social security etc he might have a macaca moment. If the dems were smart they would prep the hell out of Trammel, throw him money and start doing research on every goofy thing Brat has said or written. I hope they do, Brat is worse than Ryan. The other unknown is there is a guy running on the libertarian party. If Brat starts rambling incoherently, the libertarian might get some teabag votes.
