The NFL - Ray Rice and Terrelle Pryor

The NFL yesterday suspended Ray Rice for two games for assaulting a woman.

Terrelle Pryor was involved in a scandal IN COLLEGE while at Ohio State University* involving trading football gear for tattoos.

*full disclosure I am a born in Ohio - full fledged Buckeye fan. This is not in anyway meant to defend Pryor or THE Ohio State University in anyway about that matter.

How many games did the NFL suspend Terrelle Pryor for his non-violent actions while IN COLLEGE BEFORE HAVING ENTERED THE LEAGUE or even being ELIGIBLE TO BE DRAFTED?

I kind of remember the Pryor Scandal, but I don't know what the NFL did. I'm a huge college football fan, but I kind of lose interest when they go on to the NFL.

There is bound to be someone who knows this. I heard it discussed in a sports radio show this morning. I had forgotten about it too.

5. What about what they're proposing for Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon?

His offenses are related to substance abuse. Granted he's a repeat offender, but they're initially talking about suspending him for an entire season.

The NFL is so hypocritical. They fine and suspend players for excessively violent hits, yet the NFL will use video footage of said violent hits to market their product. People involved in violent crimes get a slap on the wrist while people in nonviolent "crimes" (i.e. - marijuana use) - face more severe punishments.

This is why I've become increasingly disinterested in the NFL. That and their extremely overpriced tickets and merchandise. I've got better things to do on Sunday afternoons.

9. There a big difference in a first violation and multiple violations usual in the NFL

Hence there no hypocrisy in this case. Gordon is facing a normal suspension for a repeat offender.

This was Rice’s first violation of any NFL policy—personal-conduct or substance-abuse—in his six-year NFL career.

On June 7, 2013, the NFL announced that Gordon would be suspended for the first two games of the 2013 season due to violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy

On May 9, 2014, reports stated that Gordon could be suspended for the entire 2014 season because of a 2nd failed drug test.

That is how the NFL normally works on these things. The fines get bigger and bigger. If Rice does something again the fine will likely be much larger although the drug suspension policy is much more concrete I believe.

apology to his wife, brought out to sit next to him. Of course, he may very well have apologized to her but it didn't reach my ears. He has an ego the size of Rhode Island..

7. Terrelle Pryor seems to be a very nice guy

I'm a big Raiders fan and followed Pryor ever since he came out early and was chosen in the supplemental draft. I'm not sure how many games he had to sit out but it was more than three or four and I guessed six. Pryor seems to be a really nice guy and a tremendously gifted athlete, a quarterback with the speed of a wide receiver (ran a 4.38 40). Unfortunately he wasn't taught proper mechanics at Ohio State as far as his throwing motion and his foot work. In addition, the fact that he was used very little for many games after being drafted by Oakland and languished on the bench as a third stringer means he hasn't learned how to read defenses. He's still young though and hopefully will learn after being traded to Seattle. He has a decent arm.

What impressed about Pryor was his great attitude. He's been very positive and has a tireless work ethic. He's worked entire off seasons with his receivers, throwing all day long at a community college in Oakland and has hired elite quarterback coaches at his own expense to mentor him. I've never read about a single negative word or act of his while he was with the Raiders. In fact, the coaches complained that he played hurt, didn't want to come out of the game because of his competitive spirit, and didn't tell them. Everyone around him has commented on the fact that he's a great kid. Unfortunately there was a lot of disparaging talk about him on the part of some fans, who didn't want him on the team because he couldn't win games. On several blogs, the talk got downright racist about him.

I hope he does well with Seattle and makes their team.

Commissioner on Pryor:
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7040047/nfl-upholds-terrelle-pryor-5-game-ban-cites-integrity

"I believe it is a fair conclusion that he intentionally took steps to ensure that he would be declared ineligible for further college play and would be able to enter the NFL via the supplemental draft," Goodell said in a news release. "Taken as a whole, I found that this conduct was tantamount to a deliberate manipulation of our eligibility rules in a way that distorts the underlying principles and calls into question the integrity of those rules."

You might disagree with this but Goodell concluded the actions of Pryor had actual NFL draft implications and didn't want to encourage other players from getting around the NFL draft day and that is why the 5 games.

Ray Rice

Rice’s wife, a source said, made a moving and apparently convincing case to Goodell during a June 16 hearing at Goodell’s office in Manhattan—attended by Rice, GM Ozzie Newsome, club president Dick Cass of Baltimore; and Goodell, Jeff Pash and Adolpho Birch of the league—that the incident in the hotel elevator was a one-time event, and nothing physical had happened in their relationship before or since. She urged Goodell, the source said, to not ruin Rice’s image and career with his sanctions.

This was Rice’s first violation of any NFL policy—personal-conduct or substance-abuse—in his six-year NFL career.

Rice was not convicted of a crime in conjunction with the incident, and the New Jersey prosecutor chose not to pursue a case against him last spring after he entered a pre-trial counseling program.

Rice has been the Ravens’ leading player in volunteer work in the community. At the time of the assault, he led a Maryland anti-bullying campaign. At the Super Bowl last winter, he was part of an NFL player panel for a cable-TV anti-bullying show and spoke emotionally about needing to be vigilant on the subject.

Rice admitted his mistake soon after the incident and went into counseling.

So the NFL commissioner did weigh a lot of stuff with Rice. He suspended a man that will not even face a trial! That's a pretty hard line to draw in my opinion. You might disagree but infractions of your contract that are football related such as PEDs or circumventing the draft rules probably should have longer suspensions than violations of the contract where there is no-conviction and it was not NFL related. I have a problem with the NJ DA not the NFL commissioner who probably got both suspensions correct.
