Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX): Ban Non-English Speakers From Schools Because They ‘Bring Education Down'

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) lashed out at President Barack Obama because refugee children who fled from violence in Central America were being allowed to go to school in the United States, which he asserted was “not fair” to English speakers. “When the president has worked on a strategic plan to deal with ISIS — or not — maybe he didn’t have enough time to think about education,” Gohmert quipped to Fox News host Tucker Carlson. “But you think about it, he calls it a Dreamers bill, what he proposed, but it is more of a nightmare.”

“It’s not fair to kids that come in and speak only Spanish, throw them in a classroom with English-speaking students. It’s unfair to both the English-speaking and to the Spanish-speaking students,” he continued. “It is not fair. And not only that, Texas is going back, and you’ve got to speak Spanish to teach English in a school. It is incredible the amount of cost that’s being shoved onto the Texas schools.” Carlson argued that immigrants who were going to school in the U.S. were part of a “scam” because some who tried to enroll were “people who were pretending to be kids who aren’t.”

Gohmert insisted that the president was “thinking only about the foreign students.” “For students, young kids trying to learn the most they can, and the teacher has to bring the education down to the lowest level, which means we’re not educating our kids the way they should be,” the Tea Party-backed Republican explained. “It is a disaster to these schools to have this many surging people coming in, students coming in.” “It isn’t fair the local students,” he said. “It’s not fair to the schools, and we bear the cost of the president dreaming. I think he’s daydreaming. I don’t think it’s a Dreamer bill, it’s a daydreamer. He’s daydreaming while he’s playing golf. The answer’s on the 18th hole.” http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/09/02/louie-gohmert-ban-non-english-speakers-from-schools-because-they-bring-education-down/

Anyone who has heard Louie Gohmert's word salad speechifying already knows that English is his second language too.

Louie you should go back to school and stay there.

who think they speak standard English. Look at all those teabagger signs. We waste tons of money trying to teach these morons English. And they have no excuse for not having learned unlike non-native speakers.

I guess he'll never say "enchilada" or "taco" or "Llano Estacado" unless somebody puts a gun to his head.

It's quite useful and Texans have adopted many words in Spanish. We don't even think about it. We used to be a place called "Mexico". What an idiot.

Notice that these rightwingers are obsessed with Spanish speakers. Remember the guy that was confronted last week by a young woman and he said "Oh you speak very good English" and she corrected him and said, "I was born here" and he seemed to be shocked at that. Shocked that there are native-born Hispanics here who speak English as their first language.

Goomer the Tumor is such an idiot that he doesn't know about the huge demand for bilingual education in the schools. Nor does he know that the younger you are, the easier it is to learn more than one language.

I took Spanish long ago back in junior high. I was 10 or 11. It soaked in. I made straight A's. I can almost think in Spanish and can sometimes spout complete sentences if I'm wound up or I've practiced. I've also picked up various phrases in other Romance languages like French and Italian. I will learn a word in Spanish and go back and look up the Latin root, which is always similar.

German, OTOH, baffles me totally. I know English is a Germanic language and a lot of the words are the same, but I still don't get it.
