Utah elementary school teacher accidentally shot herself in the leg on Thursday, but no students were on school grounds at the time and no one else was injured, officials said..
The teacher, who was not identified, suffered a leg wound after the weapon accidentally discharged in the restroom of Westbrook Elementary School in Taylorsville, Utah, around 8:45 a.m., according to Ben Horsley, communications director for the Granite School District.
No one else was injured, and the teacher remains in "good condition" at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah, Horsley said.
The teacher had a license to carry a concealed weapon in Utah, and Horsley said the teacher was not required to tell anyone she was armed.

(9,126 posts)then next time it will be a student. Two teachers accidentally discharge their weapons in one week? How insane is that? Now a fight can turn deadly, an enraged teenager just has to tackle his or her out of shape teacher and now has a gun. Think it won't happen? I KNOW it will.

Do we need more bad guys to level out the stats?

Comparing accidental shootings to legitimate shootings of bad guys doesn't seem logical.
This story is yet another case for comprehensive safety training for carriers on campuses, especially.

(43,049 posts)250 or so incidents, so don't know the total there.
Anyway, most of them seemed like proper defensive actions, but an awful lot of them either had nothing to do with "defense" and with many of them the guns might have precipitated the events.

(48,181 posts)have a good reason for carrying, like for example people transporting bags of money.

(68,644 posts)The school needs to adjust their policy to require that no rounds can be chambered or the magazine must be kept separate or, etc., etc.
Because if safe handling and carrying procedures were being followed, this discharge could not have happened.
They should have to inform school administrators who, in turn, should be sure they're trained regularly and also get some regular practice.
It's Utah, I imagine they'll work it out:
Gun-rights advocates say teachers can act faster than law enforcement in the first few minutes of any attack at a school.
The Utah Shooting Sports Council, the state's biggest gun lobby, has offered free basic gun training classes to teachers.
"We trust our kids with teachers every day," Clark Aposhian, chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council, told The Associated Press in March 2013. "Why do we think they'll be any danger?"

(18,197 posts)Reasons for carrying a gun:
Transporting bags of money = good reason
Protecting one's self= not a good reason
BTW I do not believe armed teachers is a good solution
Warren Stupidity
(48,181 posts)Note I said nothing about open carry. She would not have been allowed in school had she done that.

(18,197 posts)Open carry either
Warren Stupidity
(48,181 posts)Paranoia is not sufficient cause for concealed carry. You do know that many states used to strictly regulate concealed carry - you needed a permit and you needed to show cause for why a permit was needed. And society did not collapse from bad guys. Nor did teachers accidentally execute toilets. Seems to me that was a much better system.

(19,537 posts)Dennis Richardson, the Republican candidate running against Kitzhaber was early on a heavy advocate of arming teachers after the Clackamas mall shooting here and the Sandy Hook shootings... Voters here in Oregon should be made aware of how incidents like this document that giving teachers weapons would likely make things worse in terms of hazards to students than better, and that he should NOT be the governor...

(34,485 posts)This is why I don't agree with teachers bringing guns to school. Thankfully there were no kids in the school that day but we all know accidents happen. I really don't agree with the while teachers with guns and open carry law that right wingers are trying to put forth everywhere.
A while back I remember reading a story where this guy had his concealed weapon on him in a restaurant. As he was seated in his booth, somehow his gun accidently discharged and hit this lady in the hip. It didn't kill her but she had months of therapy and thousands of dollars in medical bills. All because this schmuck needed his gun to eat.
I am afraid one day we will be reading where some kid (or anyone for that matter) will accidently get shot while eating his chicken nuggets with his family.

(23,812 posts)...made me consider home-schooling our sons, who are now 21 and 24. The possibility that a teacher could be armed but not required to reveal that to the parents would have been sufficient reason.
