Loyal Dog Guards Boy’s Grave, Spends Days Without Food or Water

As pet parents, we’re always moved by stories of dogs that display incredible loyalty and devotion to their owners, even after those owners have passed away. One recent example of this type of love, out of Chennai, India, is particularly emotional.

India Blue Cross general manager Dawn Williams was on a rescue mission during the first week of August and spotted a dog sitting on a freshly dug grave. He didn’t think much of it and the team continued on their way, but when Williams drove past the same place on another rescue mission on August 13th, he noticed the same dog sitting at the same grave looking as if it hadn’t moved. According to the India Blue Cross Facebook page, Williams and his team drove back to the graveyard after their rescue and tried to coax the dog—who seemed clearly distraught and under-nourished—to them with biscuits and water, but it refused to move.

The team went to a nearby shop to inquire about the dog and learned that he had been a constant companion of an 18-year-old construction worker who adopted the dog, named Tommy, five years ago, according to the NY Daily News. The boy, named Bhaskar Shri, was hit by a motorcycle and died on August 2nd and it appeared that Tommy hadn’t moved since the boy's burial.

Williams found Shri’s home and located his mother, who accompanied him to her son’s grave. The boy’s mother assumed the dog had run away when her son died. The mother and Tommy recognized each other immediately, and Williams said that Tommy rested his head on the woman’s feet and whimpered while she bent down, lifted Tommy’s head and buried her face against his neck in tears.

The boy’s mother then picked Tommy up and carried him back into her home, telling Williams and his team as she left, according to Facebook, that she had wrongfully thought because her only child had died that she had nothing to live for.

While Tommy’s owner, and a mother’s son, can’t be returned, we’re so glad to hear these two have found solace in each other and that Tommy will be cared for by family.

BTW: you too can help feed shelter dogs & cats just by taking a couple of fun animal trivia quizzes every day. Halo Pet Food (the one owned by Ellen DeGeneres) donates kibble to dogs & cats for every person who takes the quiz--it doesn't matter if you get the question right or wrong. It was started in 2008 by 11 year-old Mimi Ausland. To date, Halo "has served over

The poor boy rescued the dog and now the dog will rescue the mother and help her get through this loss as best she can.

A day without visiting them is like a day without sunshine. Now we can donate kitty litter too. Awesome!

Whenever my kitty hears that sound he perks up his ears trying to figure out where it's coming from. The meow at the end, not so much.

The reaction of the boys mother brought tears to my eyes, I needed to be reminded of our humanity.
