A President pre-occupied with other thoughts?

A lot of patriotic bowels in an uproar over the President's coffee cup salute. Definitely not the way it should be done. But not the most important issue of the day, either. There is a war going on and people are dying. It would have been better if the President had ignored the salute entirely, but he would have been criticized for that, also.

Obviously, the President has other things on his mind and forgot he had a cup in his hand and got caught by the camera. Not one of his finer moments but not the end of the world.

As you stated, in the greater scheme of things, this isn't even a blip on the radar.

into the army (1953). I was at Ft. Knox for basic and had been to the PX. I had only been in service for about a week, and I was return from the PX carrying a bag in my right hand. As I passed an officer. I saluted with my LEFT hand. He took about 10 steps before he hollered at me and asked how long I been there. I told him a week. He then ripped me for having saluted with my left hand. He told me to never carry anything in my right hand. I MUST always salute with my right hand. I didn't think it was funny at the time.

6. No civilian President should ever salute. Unfortunately, Reagan got that started.

But we have a civilian government and it controls the military -- and that fact is blurred with this new saluting custom.

If the President does not salute, the soldier holds his salute until the Commander in Chief is past, then he drops his salute. If the President wants to return the salute, that is up to his discretion. You are right, the whole BS was started by Reagan.
