The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,280 posts)his campaign will crash and burn on takeoff. Every day he says something a bit loonier - like this statement that the "increasing national debt" will cause anarchy. Except that the national debt isn't increasing; under OBama it has decreased. But, hey, facts are for losers. I hope they do nominate him. He may be a fine surgeon but where politics are concerned he's a cross between Sarah Palin and Rick Perry with a touch of Herman Cain. And southern GOPers in particular aren't going to vote for a black guy, even one who spouts their favorite brand of nonsense.

(58,440 posts)and it's why they can get away with the lie. The "debt" is still increasing, although the "deficit" has decreased significantly, which means the debt is increasing at a slower rate.
The evil beauty of it is that the conserves can complain about either one, and just shift from one term to the other. Their ignorant minions don't realize the difference, so it works for them.

(6,825 posts)it is the deficits that are decreasing.
As long as we run a yearly budget deficit, the overall debt goes up.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,280 posts)it's usually the deficit they complain about, which is in fact shrinking, and the more it shrinks the more slowly the debt will increase, so there is no financial apocalypse in store as Carson suggests. Wasn't it Dick Cheney who said "deficits don't matter?" And regardless, it's not going to cause "anarchy."

(22,871 posts)as their nominee,it would be a democratic bloodbath of epic proportions.

(22,271 posts)unless the teaklanners decide to break away from the Republicans and form their own party, in which case, there's no way they're going to nominate a person of color for their candidate.

(31,805 posts)Why are you suggesting he is the "top contender"?

(6,913 posts)So he's second among the crazy right fringe, making him a real contender!
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,280 posts)It didn't get her very far.

(31,805 posts)like of actual voters. My friends and I can get together in my living room and do a poll but I don't think it would mean much.

(13,386 posts)That's the only way a Republican will be selected in 2016.

(17,621 posts)There was a time when a lunatic like Carson could not get near a presidential nomination -- not even the Republican nomination.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,280 posts)Perry, Bachmann, Cain, and most of the other passengers in the GOP's clown cars in the last few election cycles would never have been allowed within 100 miles of a primary, let alone given the opportunity to present their "ideas" in a televised, presumably serious debate. But now they are taken seriously, and some of them have even managed to win congressional elections, which tells you something about the lunacy of the GOP "base." I can't think of a single Democratic contender for the nomination in any election who ever seemed to be actually mentally ill. For the GOP it's most of them.

(23,199 posts)much less a nomination.

(10,005 posts)when Moderate Mitt is going to be the candidate. IMO.

(46,262 posts)Chris Wallace was honest for a change, and said even getting the nomination for Carson would be a real long shot.

(115,280 posts)is disturbing enough.
