Where's Chucky??...why isn't he saying that Joni should ALSO be disqualified for refusing to answer questions?..well Chucky?......
In Iowa today, Hillary Clinton claimed that Republican Senate candidate Joni Ernst has disqualified herself from office by refusing to answer questions.
CNN reported,
Democrat Bruce Braley has been willing to do and his opponent has not, she said.
It truly seems like it should be in disqualifying in Iowa of all states to avoid answering questions, Clinton added to a sustained round of applause.

Clintons remarks in Iowa struck on a latent hypocrisy. Republicans and Beltway media insiders like NBCs Chuck Todd claimed that Kentucky Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes disqualified herself from office by refusing to say who she voted for in 2012. The same media and talking heads have had nothing to say about Republican Senate Joni Ernst canceling several meeting with newspaper editorial boards in Iowa. Grimes may not want to discuss who she voted for as a private citizen, but Ernst is refusing to tell the voters what she stands for and what she will do if she gets elected.
Republicans opened the door to the disqualification questions. Hillary Clinton walked right in and knocked them on their backsides. The Iowa Senate race is very close. Ernsts refusal to tell the voters what she will do if she wins is a way for her to try to run out the clock and backdoor her way into the United States Senate.

(15,438 posts)As it was intended.
I mean, they've spent hundreds of thousands on ads using Toady's words in their political ads. American businessmen are anything but stupid, btw.
So, in summary, it's working out just the way it was intended, Erich, and only a political novice would believe it was a "stupid thing" so your answer is yes, it'll work out for Lundergan-Grimes. Never heard the idiom, what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander?

(14,733 posts)In almost every case, as a justification for somebody doing something stupid or wrong because somebody else did something stupid or wrong first. Guy cheats on his wife, wife uses that idiom, cheats on the husband, and so on.
I can't recall ever hearing anyone trot it out as a rationale for doing something positive.

(19,460 posts)I think all of this has been well played by Alison. Love that she called Chucky the "moderator" of MTP. All we have to do is get the Dems out to vote and Mcturtle is gone.

I don't think voters like anyone telling them 'so and so has disqualified themselves'. I think they like to make that sort of decision by themselves.
Time will tell, though, and in a week's time we'll know whether it helped enough or not.

(82,849 posts)Thank you for explaining that in such elementary terms.
The reason Clinton said that bit about "disqualifying" Ernst was to point up how dumb Todd's comment about Grimes was. If there are voters who lend credence to Todd for his numbskull remark, shouldn't those same voters lend credence to Clinton using the exact same logic against Ernst?
One of the differences between Ernst and Grimes, however, is that Grimes declined to answer a pointless question about who she voted for, while Ernst has been dodging every question from the local media.

(5,082 posts)That's your headline? Hillary calls out a politician for avoiding answering questions? Can it get any more banal coming from our leading primary candidate who by the way is close friends with the Bushes? This is pathetic. It's all noise and nothing more. There are real things that need to be questioned and called out and like the Reoublicans Hillary isn't doing that. It's a sick joke in my opinion. This is the most important job in the world and it's being run by a PR firm instead if people with principles. Elizabeth Warren you have my vote and tell all those that say put you as VP on a Clinton ticket that they are either visionless lemmings or chauvinistic fools. It's not because you're a woman that we want you although it's kinda nice and doesn't hurt but it's because you're the best and only real candidate and we don't want to pollute the populist message with any hawkish hubris or status quo nepotism.

For those who miss the how this is played, it is a legal maneuver, brought public. It is not a "Billy did it so why can't I?". but "counselor, you opened the door by bringing it up, so I am just following in your footsteps.."

(16,113 posts)At the end of Bill's responses, you'd FEEL like he answered your question but if you read back the response, you'd realize he didn't ACTUALLY answer anything. Pointing out that voters should expect their candidates to answer questions is a great idea, but suggesting that not answering questions DISQUALIFIES one from office makes her sound like she's just making up rules. People being honest with themselves will think Clinton looks just as stupid as Todd did.
azureblue
(2,131 posts)what Mr. Clinton has to do with this, especially since this happened about 10 years ago? And shows your ignorance of what actually happened. OR maybe what Fox told you to think.
hughee99
(16,113 posts)husband was running the country, but that's certainly not specific to her husband. All politicians dodge questions, her husband was just better at it than most.
As I said, Mrs. Clinton was right to point out that Ernst wasn't answering the questions she should. She took what should have been a great argument and went too far by suggesting that it DISQUALIFIED Ernst from office. It makes it look like Clinton look bad and HURTS the argument.
As far as my "ignorance of what actually happened" and what "Fox news told me to think", I think perhaps your only half as clever as you think you are. We both know refusal to answer questions doesn't disqualify anyone from office, and Sec. Clinton knows it too. To say this leaves people with the impression she's just making shit up, and that HURTS what otherwise should be a great point. Think whatever you want about my motivations, but you know that's true.
yes, hitting them where they live. in hypocrisy land.

We liberals are generally highly intelligent, but it can also be a problem when we analyze every detail, and scrupulously shoot ourselves in the foot.

I've seen that same stupid bullshit tried out here in the Land That Time Forgot, and it never worked!
Never!
If someone wants to represent the people of a state, they have to be willing to tell the voters who will be their constituents -- if they win -- what their positions are on the issues of the day!!
You can't just yell out "Splunge" everytime someone asks you if you agree or disagree with your political opponent in a campaign for Senator!!!

(135,425 posts)do not understand the context of her remarks.
The Democrat in this race met with the big newspapers in the state for the "sit down interview" that is traditional in many parts of the country and is traditional in that state as well. His GOP opponent chickened out and was afraid to "Meet the (local) Press." These interviews are often tough, they are videoed, and the papers will put them up on the web. They really turn the candidates inside out and let the voters know what they're made of.
The fact that she ran away from the interviews IS telling.
