1. I don't know the numbers, but I do know that a few of the cops down here in Houston are

actually "wannabe vets." Guys who didn't make the cut for military duty, so they do the next best thing. It's relatively easy to become a constable, sheriff's deputy, PD officer or state trooper down here. (yeah, Houston has 4 different "types" of cop "keeping us 'safe'"

You know, tons of non-vets hanker for the power you describe...and tons of vets are kind and decent people who have tons of empathy. We can't feel sorry for poor kids from the inner city signing up as their only option and then kick them when they return.

4. Better yet, the US could demilitarize it's acting and thinking.

*ALL* countries have cops and vets, police and military. It's a necessity.
These are, or ought to be, honourable jobs.

In both cases honour dictates that the most strict regulation and second sight is also a necessity, in any viable civilization. That's just the way it is.

The USA has gone OTT in this regard. The USA cannot be stopped from without - it spends more on military than the rest of the world combined. You might be the most badass m-f-er in the universe, in your support for the police and the military, but you should have some sense of proportion w.r.t. how the police and military deal with the world.

3. It used to be that the military police officers would try for local police, but end up

as private security guards not making much. One told me that the police did not like to hire military police as they could not get rough with tough people. If you work in a corporate scene with security people, you know what I am talking about. They take a lot of crap and never dish it out.

But I knew several foot soldier types that were regular police. Those are the ones I think the police depts want.

5. Or it could be that the training a vet recives BETTER prepares them

For life as a cop - simply because they've trained and served in a harsher environment then a LEO will typically experience. IMHO, vets too, are more prone to restraint and respect for POC.

Does that mean that every vet would make a good cop? No, but neither is there any guarantee that a non-vet would make a good cop.

my two cents...

6. Yeah I doubt many Snipes, Yeomen, or Mess Specialists come home as crazed killers from the Navy.

Ya know? Come to think of it; I shot at so few Iraqis and or Iranians that I can't even remember what they look like. On the flight deck of a US Aircraft Carrier, they move so fast as to be fucking invisible. I might as well admit that, to my eternal shame, I never even hit ONE. I don't think many other Structural Mechanics did either.

I'm guessing that these Sailors could say the same thing:

Aviation Storekeeper Aviation Structural Mechanic (Hydraulics) Aviation Structural Mechanic (Structures) Aviation Support Equipment Technician (Electrical) Aviation Support Equipment Technician (Hydraulics and Structure) Aviation Support Equipment Technician (Mechanical) ASE ASH ASM Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Technician Aviation Fire Control Technician Aviation Electronics Technician Boiler Technician Cryptologic Technician (Communications) Cryptologic Technician (Administration) Disbursing Clerk Draftsman Data Processing Tech Dental Technician Electronic Warfare Technician Journalist Lithographer Mess Management Specialist Ocean Systems Technician Postal Clerk Photographers Mate Patternmaker Personnelman Radioman Submarine Surface Storekeeper Signalman Quartermaster Torpedoman's Mate.

Those are just a small sample of Naval Personnel who've not only not SEEN a fucking Iraqi, Iranian, or any other "enemy combatant", but haven't SHOT at one either. Would you like for me to post more? How about after that I start in on all the Air Force Personnel who've never SEEN a fucking Iraqi, Iranian, or any other "enemy combatant", nor shot at one? Most of the Naval Personnel I named haven't even HELD an M-16 much fired one in anger or defense of anything at all.

Maybe the next time someone wants to disparage US Veterans they can take a moment and think about those Veterans who've actually SEEN combat, those who haven't, and learn to make some kind of distinction, not that disparaging Combat Veterans would get much of a different response when someone wants to blame them for problems that have existed on this continent for about 400 years or so.

Every time I read stupid shit like this it makes me want to puke. It's absolutely on a par with idiotic bullshit about John McCain crank starting his aircraft with a wet starter handle while his tailpipe had a missile in it or some of the stupid shit people who know nothing about Flight Deck Ops tend to post on a semi-regular basis.
