National Weather Service/NHC/NSSL are all government funded (socialism, yes ?) with no private money

National Weather Service: http://www.weather.gov/

NHC: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

NSSL: http://www.nssl.noaa.gov

I was watching the tragic destructive tornadoes in Oklahoma yesterday. They decimated the towns of Bridge Creek, Oklahoma and Amber, OK.

How many taxpayers and citizens of this country are willing to allow private business(es) to make a profit off this vital information ? I don't think private industry could do a better job of it, although I'm sure the die-hard libertarians would disagree with me.

I'm thankful for the socialism in this case, as well as other cases.

ETA: Yes, I'm aware there are private businesses in the weather business, but none as vast as NWS, NHC and NSSL.

I have no desire to live half the year stranded by ice and snow at the top of the hill.
