A society with no need for planners and builders, but where lawyers and security guards have job security.
Was that ever on anybody's list of utopias?

(34,127 posts)Its provides some context, but doesn't really address your point of whether or not we are a society with no need for planners or builders.

(10,960 posts)And of course architects and engineers suffer first and most in a downturn because long-range plans are scrapped.
But percentage change does offer some information about the priorities and shape of the economy in a crisis.
And it offers a snapshot of directional change. For instance, lawyers were surely a bigger percentage of the workforce in 2010 than they were in 2007.

(21,977 posts)When there are no deals being done, you don't need lawyers to draw up the papers. If you were a lawyer in NYC, e.g., you were lucky to hang on to your job.
Some of us didn't.

(10,960 posts)So if lawyer unemployment in 2007 was 5% then in 2010 it was 6%... or whatever the base number is.
Every sector lost. But lawyers lost the least.
But a loss is a loss, of course. Particularly if personal.

(82,383 posts)What's wrong with being a lawyer or security guard?
Lawyers - means there is the rule of law - read about frontiers without lawyers, judges or courts
Security guards - more prosperity would mean more security guards, wouldn't it? If it was just the 1%, fewer security guards would be needed.
Nurses and doctors would be at the very top, not architects and engineers, in a utopia. Teachers would be up there too. Not architects.
