when i think of new mexico i picture a john wayne movie set
tall buttes and mesas in the distance and desert scrub all around
i think it may have some of that but not as much as some of its neighbors
its a rocky mountain state with snow peaks and such
every type of animal is represented there from chipmonks to cougars
pretty much annexed from mexico in the 1840s wars
in 1861 the csa claimed it as a territory
because of its border status it has had a latin influence throughout its existence and 46% of its population is descended from spanish colonists
it has the largest native population of any state except alaska
new mexico has archeological sites that go back to the mogollon and the anasazi (1200 bc)
history and nature combined to make new mexico a great place
i cant wait to go

(53,339 posts)Friends there used to ship me a case of NM Anaheim (green) chiles every year. As soon as they arrived, it was time to roast them and make chiles rellenos (using a 'crispy' recipe, not the puffy, soggy kind served in restauants). Yum!
Adding green chiles to my shopping list now...

(30,657 posts)When I went to see her, we went to the Gila National Forest. It is beautiful. There are cliff dwellings there, too. That is the part I liked best.
I enjoyed seeing the beautiful old adobe homes in Albuquerque. I liked the desert, and the mountains. But the Gila National Forest was my favorite.

(10,073 posts)Filled with works by native artists. We were there last summer, just before Labor Day. The door was open so we walked in - not a soul in sight. After wandering about for half an hour, we met a guard who said, "Don't forget to visit the other building - there's some good stuff outside the governor's office!". When we left we saw another guard who asked, "Did you see the buffalo? That's my favorite."
Santa Fe has a building that has been in use since the early 1600s. New Mexico has the oldest continuous settlement in the US, going back to the 1200, IIRC. And Chaco Canyon in one of the most impressive sites I've ever seen.
But what surprised me most as a California was how green the northwestern part of the state was.

(27,670 posts)Outside of Silver City for 4 months (I was proposed to in a little Italian Restaurant, Consentino's, outside of Silver City many moons ago, and I accepted), and outside of Santa Fe for 6 months. And various places in between for a week or two when traveling/exploring.
I've been all over the state.
It is known as the "Land of Enchantment" for very good reasons, and I love it.
The problem with New Mexico is, there's so much to see and experience, and so little time to do it, because there's so much cool shit there..
You are going to have a wonder filled experience.\
Have fun, SwampG8r!

(3,818 posts)why NM it is a blue state and AZ right next door is such a red state, although I hear that is changing. I always think of them as being similar, state-wiseish that is.

(11,546 posts)I remember our flight not being able to take off because there were so many hot air balloons in the sky. Also the desert morning and the sun rising over it is definitely one of the highlights of my short time in New Mexico. So beautiful!

New Mexico is enchanted.

(39,665 posts)The curvature is more pronounced, and I have no way to explain why.
The more the outside of a restaurant looks like a dive bar, the better the service, hospitality and food will be. A sing-song "spanglish" in small towns that can be found nowhere else -- if I ever hear it, I can usually peg someone as "grew up in rural New Mexico".
Drive-thru liquor stores, hail the size of golf balls, and low-altitude jet aircraft being terrifyingly awesome.
