"Local filmmaker Kevin McKinney suggests in his documentary Corporate FM that radio stations that cut local programming are hurting themselves and their communities.
Corporate FM opens Friday at the Screenland Crown Center. McKinney, who has photographed Phil Donohues Body of War and played Abraham Lincoln in CSA: Confederate States of America, will be on hand to answer questions after the screening. He has also launched a Kickstarter.com campaign to help distribute the film around the country."
"Q. What were some of the signs the communal quality of radio was missing?
A. There were some pretty obvious signs. (Lawrences) KLZR was voted by Rolling Stone to be one of the top 10 stations in the United States that still didnt suck. And this was 1998. And within two months of them getting that voting, they changed formats. A brick came through the window at KLZR, and the next day, it was a baseball. I put that baseball-in-the-window story in the film to show (the change) was pretty abrupt. We went from having the cool station one day to having a station that played what every other station was playing the next day.
They kept trying to say they were going to gain audience that way, when it was obvious they were already diluting an already tired market. That made no sense to me, and that has stuck with me all these years."
