Most raccoons are nocturnal and wait until dusk to come over our fence to forage bird seed on the ground. Bandit comes out between 3 to 4 in the afternoon to raid one of the the squirrel feeders. He has to carefully balance while getting something to eat from the feeder.
Marta took these while sitting on her couch.

(11,332 posts)He looks kind of small. Is he a juvenile?

(42 posts)We've seen him before...he shows up during the evening hours while there is still daylight left. He's half the size of the other raccoons we see prowling around at night.

(23,664 posts)We had a family of them take up residence in the cottonwoods down by the creek at the far end of our property. One of them (probably the mama) damn near killed one of our cats and clawed our dog so bad we had to have his eyelid stitched back on. The cat is now strictly a house cat. The dog? I think he has gained some respect for raccoons.

(1,496 posts)While Bandit's Parkour is indeed impressive, we had a raccoon get its leg stuck in the exact same type of Shepherd's crook and its leg got injured while dangling from it. Also, a stuck raccoon can make some pretty eerie noises.
I got the animal to the ground by carefully bending the crook downward until it could wrench itself off.
A few weeks later it hobbled up to our second story porch and birthed a litter of pups!

(98,872 posts)I duct taped both feeders the raccoons can get to so that won't happen. Look for it in a future photo.

(51,076 posts)that was just a few days old and bottle fed it and raised it until it was a good 25 lbs. I took it to my home place and released it and it would come visit from time to time especially during bad weather. It would bring the female and all the little ones with it and we'd let it in the utility room and they'd stay there behind and under the washing machine until morning then be ready to go on about they're way. Once in a while some of its offspring, I'm sure, still visits the dogs food bowl
Raccoons are neat animals and I love seeing them where ever it is except on the roads, they like all animals have no clue what 60 MPH is so they get run over often when they venture out on the hiways. So sad. I'm always looking for animals eyes when I drive at night and give them all the space they need to escape. so far in my 68 years of live I've only hit one wild animal and it was an Opossum what I'd tried to miss and did with my front tire but it ran under the rear one and got hit. I tried but I failed.
Thanks OS for what you do for our feathered and furry friends. You and Marta are Keepers.

(4,558 posts)Especially if you have pets. When you see Racoons, Opossums, or skunks active in the daytime there's a better than fair chance that they have rabies. It's not a guaranteed indicator but it is a higher possibility.

(98,872 posts)We also give the dogs Leptospirosis shots.

Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis is a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria. These bacteria can be found worldwide in soil and water. There are many strains of Leptospira bacteria that can cause disease. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, which means it can be spread from animals to people. Infection in people can cause flu-like symptoms and can cause liver or kidney disease. In the United States, most cases of human leptospirosis result from recreational activities involving water. Infection resulting from contact with an infected pet is much less common, but it is possible.
Leptospirosis is more common in areas with warm climates and high annual rainfall but it can occur anywhere.
Risk factors for leptospirosis
Dogs are most commonly affected. Leptospirosis in cats is rare and appears to be mild although very little is known about the disease in this species. Common risk factors for leptospirosis in dogs residing in the United States include exposure to or drinking from rivers, lakes or streams; roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife, farm animals, or water sources); exposure to wild animal or farm animal species, even if in the backyard; and contact with rodents or other dogs.
Dogs can become infected and develop leptospirosis if their mucous membranes (or skin with any wound, such as a cut or scrape) come into contact with infected urine, urine-contaminated soil, water, food or bedding; through a bite from an infected animal; by eating infected tissues or carcasses; and rarely, through breeding. It can also be passed through the placenta from the mother dog to the puppies.
