refusing help from Canada after Katrina.

This time I am betting that Obama and Trudeau have spoken and discussed assistance.

And the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

These horrible ecological catastrophes need global action.

Well, I'm sure president Trump will have it all under control.

That will come, where national leaders will miss the opportunity to speak the truth...yes, these fires will grow in frequency and intensity and we need to change now, or later. Climate change, chaos, weirding, are real.

What a tragedy...so many people displaced, and their homes gone...I cry for these people.

Meaning it is jumping from tree crown to tree crown. But the radiant heat is extremely high. The damage is not surprising, at least to me. I have photographed plenty of this in So Cal fires

it hasn't touched any of the oil sands facilities so far as most are quite far out of the city. Most of those facilities have very large firebreaks and their own fire fighting forces. So currently, the smoke is no different than any other forest fire. It does look like it might come close to the Suncor plant, but the Wildfire manager (right now, live) is saying because of the cool weather, large cleared areas and industrial firefighters on site, they don't expect the fires to actually reach the plants.
