As a white guy, I'm utterly offended that Pat Buchanan thinks that my heritage is defined by traitors and slavery supporters.

As a history teacher, I don't teach "America was 'discovered' by genocidal white racists". Instead, I present kids with facts for understanding human interactions, not hagiography. We examine the heroics and the moral pitfalls and the motivations and ALL of the impacts (cultural, physical, environmental, political, and epidemiological) involved in the European incursion into the Americas.

Buchanan is bitching about the fact that we don't just revere, but rather honestly assess what happened in the past. I'm trying to help raise a generation of kids who see the whole story, not just one selected race a pat on the back.

This country has had a little too much Pat on its back for too long.
