In 2008, almost 70 million Americans voted for Barack Obama. But whats both sad and frightening is that almost 60 million Americans voted for John McCain. Sad and frightening because Sara Palin was McCains VP running mate. And yet more frightening, because there are still millions of Americans who want to see her in the White House.
And here we are again with the terrifying possibility of a President Trump. Theres no need to reiterate the limitless reasons that this man should not be president. Its all been stated countless times, and Trump himself, every time he speaks, goes on to reinforce the reasons that he crosses the line between unqualified and dangerous.
Sane people understand why neither Trump nor Palin should ever be anywhere near the levers of power.
But to go back to the first paragraph, almost 60 million Americans voted to put Palin within one heartbeat of the presidency.
Which leaves us with the possibility that there might be enough voters to put Trump in the White House. Whats wrong with these people? How can they not (even remotely) grasp the incredible danger into which they would put themselves, along with everyone they disagree/despise/disdain? How can they not see the cliff they want to step off of?
Were still a little over five months from the presidential election and much can change between now and then. Having said that, how have we gotten here? How have we gotten to even the possibility that Donald Trump could be president of the United States?
Many think it could never happen. Im not among them. And its really hard to hold ones breathe for five months.

(21,922 posts)Every time I listen to or read a speech by Donald Trump or Sarah Palin, I'm dumbfounded. I really don't understand them. There is a complete lack of coherency to their comments. For someone who calls himself "very smart," Mr. Trump cannot speak in complete sentences or paragraphs. Sarah Palin, of course, is the queen of the word-salad bar. Neither of them have structure or dramatic arc in their speeches. Are their listeners able to discern something that I can't or don't? How can a thinking person listen to either of these freaks and then support their candidacies?
Both of these demagogues use their bigotry to reach their audiences. By appealing to their followers' prejudices, I guess the kind of logical thought that I'm missing doesn't matter. Of course, in 2008, many of the McCain/Palin supporters would have voted for anyone against Mr. Obama, (if you know what I mean). And in 2016, many of the Republican voters will vote against the woman or the Communist.
This morning I heard someone say that they'll vote for Mr. Trump because "it'll be fun to see what happens." That kind of thinking scares me.
You probably know that Mr. Trump used to be a regular on Howard Stern's radio program and he liked to regale the listeners with stories about his sex life, sex being Mr. Stern's primary stock-in-trade. And Mr. Trump has the gall to make comments about President Clinton's sex life!
This disgusting, abhorrent and ignorant man is the Republican nominee for president!
