THE UNIVERSE IS EXPANDING FASTER THAN EXPECTED

The science is interesting; and this piece of media is breathtakingly beautiful:

Summary:
Hubble Space Telescope astronomers have discovered that the universe is expanding 5-9% percent faster than expected. They made the discovery by refining the universe's current expansion rate to unprecedented accuracy, reducing the uncertainty to only 2.4%. The team made the refinements by developing innovative techniques that improved the precision of distance measurements to faraway galaxies. These measurements are fundamental to making more precise calculations of how fast the universe expands with time, a value called the Hubble constant.

That was never one of my favorite songs, but it was a fun one to sing along with. I feel old just saying that.

Lovely images in the video. You sure know how to find them.

makes this seem like something totally frivolous.

I'd prefer and actual serious science report.

I have a son who is an astronomer, so I think I'll call him tomorrow about this.

... a 5th "repellant" force in our universe (or we may not fully understand how gravity works at great distances.) Or, it may be due to unique properties of dark matter & dark energy. Myself, I still think we don't understand nearly enough about the zero point energy of space, a property inherent to the fabric of space-time itself, & as all energy we know of in this universe seeks to dissipate (achieve a lower state of entropy) its dissipation would drive the expansion of space.

It could also eliminate the need for "magical" hyperinflation (expansion faster than the speed of light) following "the" Big Bang because if the zero point energy is a quantum quantity (as is every other quantity we can measure) it means there have been many Big Bangs (trillions?) & given infinite time there might be infinite Big Bangs & infinite universes.

And if M-Theory is correct & our universe has 22 dimensions, what forces might exist in the 18 dimensions we don't directly experience? Those dimensions are incredibly small compared to the scale we live our lives in, but if their effects were combined over billions of light years, they could be non-trivial.
