a place with a livable summer, such as ME, Canada, etc., during the summer months?
Because where they live is so hot as to be unlivable. It should be against the law for the temps to go above 90.

(32,527 posts)the rest of my retirement. The only other place I'd live, for the weather, would be San Diego. Spent a year looking into it and found there is no way I could afford it. I do try to vacation there every year or so, both winter and summer are perfect there.

(6,095 posts)I am in central NC and know quite a few who spend the summers in cooler locations. I know quite a few in the academic community who have summer homes in Maine; others, out on Cape Cod.
The most common summer escape around here is to the NC mountains. In addition to being one of the top tourist destinations in the country, there are many people with summer homes all through that region. The most famous summer home is Biltmore.

(31,318 posts)and go back to an apartment in Ft. Lee, NJ, right across the river from NYC, for the summer and early fall. Don't know if it qualifies for 'cooler' but it sure qualifies
for having access to world class culture.

(522 posts)I am in a small NE Georgia town with mountains and a large lake. We have many, many folks who have summer homes here.

(698 posts)I have lived in St Louis for the past 24 years, but I have been looking for possible retirement property in the mountains of NC where I did a couple of years undergrad work before finishing down at South Carolina (where I grew up). I love the mountains especially in Fall and Winter.
I have thought about the Northeast for retirement because I want to go somewhere cool (Iceland, maybe?), but Ill probably end up staying where I am because of a nice circle of friends and my own home.

(11,949 posts)Louisiana native, Florida resident. It is approaching my favorite time of the year. Love the heat. Fish and do yard work all day long. Keep AC no cooler than 78.
Drink lots of water, wear long sleeves and a big hat and all is good.
Now temps below 60, shoes on the other foot!
Have a great, cool, day!!

(43,081 posts)Lots of swimming, afternoon showers keep things green, and the cool looking huge clouds that billow on the horizon. It's my favorite time of year here.
I have no desire to try to escape the heat. Seems ass-backwards to me.

(63,221 posts)It is a breezy 64 here in Boston today which is perfect for me. I love it when it is in the 50's and 60's. I am miserable if it goes above 75 especially if it is humid. I spend most of the summer inside with the AC blasting.
I would love to migrate with the seasons, because I don't like extreme cold either. I can handle it down to about 30 degrees but if it gets much colder than that i'm not happy, especially if it's windy.

(698 posts)The older I get the more I hate summer.
My Sis lives in FL and while it is pretty and green pretty much all year when I visit, the heat and humidity is just too much. I'm drenched walking from her house to the car!
Give me temps between 25-55 and I'm happy as a clam.

(53,339 posts)My hotel was full of Canadian snowbirds, lol! And most of them had been coming there every year for a couple of decades or more. I had so much fun with them that I made a point of going there for vacation again.

(12,148 posts)Weekends from DC to Ocean City. We would head to the Beltway to eat at our favorite Greek restaurant, and a little shopping. It was nice seeing all the cars going the opposite direction.

(12,132 posts)either way, it's the opposite of snowbirds.
I loved visiting Denver in October, Maine in February, Indiana at thanksgiving and all the other places I've been at the wrong time. It always reminds why I'm so happy to get home to Florida.
And then I crank down the AC. go figure lol.

(7,107 posts)I love the heat. I live in Florida and rarely use the Air Conditioner.
Ceiling fans and open up the house to the seabreeze and I'm one happy guy.
Air Conditioning ruined this state. Brought in all these people who hate the heat. I mean, WTF? It's FLORIDA!
If it was up to me, A/C would be banned.
