Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez died in a boating crash this morning

with two other victims. The boat hit a jetty and crashed into rocks -speed appears to be the problem.

<snip>
Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident early Sunday morning in Florida, the Marlins confirmed.

The Marlins' game against the Atlanta Braves scheduled for Sunday afternoon has been canceled.

Fernandez, the 24-year-old right-hander whose vibrant personality endeared himself to fans as much as his dominant fastball, was a Cuban-born pitcher who grew up in Tampa and was drafted 11th overall by the Marlins in 2011. He overcame Tommy John surgery in 2014 and returned to dominant form this season, winning 16 games, striking out 253 batters and earning an All-Star Game berth.

He was a strickout machine and David Oritiz was hoping to recruit him to play in Boston. Even worse, he was bumped in the rotation to allow another pitcher called up to pitch today. Had he been in the rotation pitching today, no way is he on a boat in Miami Bay at 3 in the morning....

Here's the story of when the Marlins got his Abuela a visa so she could see him play.

I'm a big fan and this really hurt. All day I've been reading stories and watching highlights.

It made feel even worse about Joses's death. I didn't realize the effort his family made to come here. Yeah, he was a huge MLB star, but I will bet there 100'S of thousands of guys like Jose who would make this a better country. We have lost a great pitcher and a better American.

As a life long baseball and Mets fan, I am devastated. He was one of baseball's shining stars. Not only that, his escape from Cuba is a testament to his character and determination. RIP Jose. God bless your family.
