When I came to the US and saw those words on the Statue of Liberty: "Give me your tired, your poor..."
my parents has explained to me the thoughts and intentions behind that prose. I grew up off and on between the US and Germany. Much of my youth had my German relatives telling me how lucky I am to live in such a great nation as the US. My mom explained to me the basic human decency and lofty goals of the ingrained culture of the United States.
Yes, there have been other periods of shame in the US, but never have I seen or heard or lived through such a vile campaign as this. How can 35-40% of the US support Trump. I wish those same people would interview survivors of German life during the 30's, I wish they would break bread with those who struggled for civil rights in the 60's and I wish they would immerse themselves in higher minds and goals of many who have shaped this nation.
As a European and having been back there in the past 15 months, so many of our European neighbors have expressed to me how astounded they are that this is one of our nominees. Gone is civility, gone is a certain sense of decency in our political discourse. Gone is an adult discussion of the problems, goals, dreams and potential of our nation. Instead we are left with the tawdry details of a sexual pervert, self aggrandizer, dishonest, belligerent, racist misogynist. God help the USA.

(18,670 posts)I've been here all my life and thought I would never see this day. The thought that America could turn into...this is unreal. I guess I've been blinded or didn't see what people were hiding from the rest of us; racism, fear, hatred, bigotry.
It's heartbreaking to watch all the ideals most of us were taught about America get tossed out the window for greed, xenophobia and heartlessness. It's as if the concepts of "Good and Evil" have been flipped, and all those sacred American ideals that have been fought and sacrificed for have become no more than a f*cking joke to a lot of people. People who strive to embody compassion, kindness, empathy and generosity are sneered at as being "pussies" or "cucks".
I've been utterly repulsed by Trump for 30 years on top of everything else. Even then it was clear he was a vile, vulgar, ignorant misogynist only out for #1. I wasn't laughing during the primaries because I knew he'd be the nominee. He is the embodiment of the GOP. The only problem they have with him is he doesn't have a filter. You have to teach people how to hate, discriminate and be greedy assholes gently or else most will reject what the GOP embodies outright.

(874 posts)elevated out of the gutter...he will be banished to the recesses of the sewer soon enough!
I am really very hopeful that he will be defeated with a wide margin and that will show the world that this is NOT what America represents. Their is a faction of assholes everywhere and America is no different...however, the good people of the USA must rise up, speak and stamp out these vile creatures.

(14,848 posts)... who witnessed the rise of the Nazis.
He was VERY disturbed by the strong militarism in this country back in the 70's (even before Reagan). He was convinced that Germany's history of militarism contributed to the rise of Hitler and the Nazis.
Maybe that German physicist was full of it, but I suddenly recalled my brother telling me what "Fritz" said to him almost 40 years ago.
