Ace Hardware said today that it would not sell propane in the region of the Standing Rock water protectors, where blizzard conditions are placing lives at risk. Ace said it is responding to a request by law enforcement.
Ace Hardware's policy, which defies human decency and human rights, can be heard in this audio recording by Kevin Gilbertt.
Gilbertt said propane is needed to keep people alive.
Gilbertt encouraged people to call Ace Hardware customer service and respond. "There is not enough wood in camp," he said, pointing out that it is too cold to go out, and too difficult to get enough wood for heat in camp.
Ace Hardware said it will not sell "incendiary" products in the vicinity of Standing Rock pipeline.
The company said, "Ace Hardware stores in the vicinity of recent pipeline protests in North Dakota have been requested by law enforcement officials to refrain from selling materials that could be used as incendiary devices."
Gilbertt said, "ACE Hardware needs to be boycotted."
Gilbertt points out that law enforcement, including the Morton County Sheriff's Department, has been brutalizing water protectors. While engaging in acts of cruelty and inflicting serious injury, law enforcement has spread lies about the water protectors.

(14,449 posts)Why are the police demanding ace not sell items to them. The police should be the focus.

(37,748 posts)Police merely requested, rather than demanded. Hence, Ace as a concern, is quite valid.

(19,429 posts)The massive snowfall 1 to 2 feet across central North Dakota signaled a quick switch of the seasons. And now, after temperatures that often flirted with 30 degrees above normal in November, the Bismarck area is expected to slide sharply in the opposite direction for December.
National Weather Service meteorologist Janine Vining said there is a chance of snow on Saturday, and then a weather system is expected to move in Sunday night or Monday morning that will bring real North Dakota winter temperatures to the area. While highs Sunday and Monday are forecast in the 20s, by Tuesday the high may be in the teens -- and lows could dip below zero.

I don't think those little propane tanks from a hardware store are going to do it.

(146,192 posts)Who can say. Maybe it was one ACE hardware store that refused. I don't know. In the thread, ACE apparently claims the story isn't true, as well. Are there any independent corroborators for the story?
And who is bsnorrell? Anyone can have a blog. I have several. I can write anything I please on them.

(26,366 posts)Note that ACE is a co-operative owned by the individual store owners not a national corporate chain, so ACE
doesn't determine what the individual stores sell or don't sell.

(49,533 posts)I think most (if not all) their stores are franchised.
But let me just take the opportunity here to plug for Ace, though I am not affiliated with them in any way: if you are near one, please try shopping there first. Yes you'll likely pay a bit more on a few items but they truly do focus on customer service. You will easily find someone who can help you. You won't have to walk a quarter mile between departments. And your money will stay generally in your local economy. Ace is the last line of defense against the national box stores.

And as a store-owned co-op "Ace" itself can't really determine what the individually owned
stores sell or don't sell.
Other hardware co-ops include "True Value" and "Do It Best".

(4,358 posts)Just days after police turned water cannons on activists protesting the Dakota Access pipeline in freezing North Dakota weather, new reports suggest local police may have attempted to ban area hardware stores from selling certain items to Standing Rock activists hunkering down in the cold
According to a messages shared across social media Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, an unidentified law enforcement agency allegedly contacted at least one local Ace Hardware store, and asked that they refrain from selling materials that could be used as incendiary devices. A screenshot posted by singer Neko Case shows an apparent Ace Hardware response to inquiries about the alleged bancomplete with incident identification numberin which an employee identified as Camillia H. states that the local stores decision to accept the polices request is not a reflection of any corporate viewpoint on the pipeline project.

(6,324 posts)If the protestors think they are going to actually stay warm in those conditions using that they have planned very, very poorly. That's not just hard to do, but it's the most costly, inefficient and wasteful way to do it generating lots of steel bottles to the landfill that probably can't be recycled because they still have some dangerous gas in them.
