Every ten years, the U.S. takes a census. The census is the key for determining who holds power in the U.S. House of Representatives and the legislatures of each state. This is because electoral districts are determined by population. But how those districts are divided up is the choice of those in charge in each state. The GOP currently controls about two thirds of the state legislatures.
So who do you think will control congressional districts in 2020? C'mon, don't think too hard about it. After so many Dems did not show up this year, and we are stuck with the orange monster, who is stupid enough to believe we can take back "control" of the House and state legislatures in 2018?
IMO, the GOP is a criminal enterprise and has been for the last few decades. They have a lock on government power (voter IDs, too few polling places in a district, etc.) and they will still have it unless we totally overthrow them in 2018. That will not happen because Republicans turn out for mid-term elections. Democrats don't. And that doesn't even consider the Trump Administration's ability to influence elections/voter turnout, etc.
So would someone explain to me how democracy will survive this horrible era.

you might think a disaster under republican rule would wake people up, but, you name it, watergate, iran-contra, the great recession, etc., no matter the scandal, at most it's a temporary setback for republicans and they're right back to the same old sh*t, only worse.
at a minimum, we need better organization and more mobilization. it starts at the state and local level. if we can un-gerrymander some of these problem states, that would be a huge help at the federal level, along with getting rid of the disenfranchisement laws.

(15,023 posts)We Democrats tend to play by the "rules." Republicans don't give a rat's ass about "rules," or anything else, than holding onto their power.
In effect, we are scewing ourselves election after election. But I really don't know how to beat them without becoming what they are.

(51,974 posts)if criminals are committing acts of violence in the streets, you (or the police) have to fight back, and that may mean using violence. but that doesn't make you or the police criminals. it just means you're not willing to let them roll all over you.
