Why would we expect Ossoff to win a runoff?

(11,101 posts)Still, 50% in Newt's district is a pretty good sign over all. But at some point it was got to be more than "a good showing" for these elections to mean anything.

(100,326 posts)In the run off Handel is going to need every Republican who voted against her because she is a RINO and a lot more.

(505 posts)According to wikipedia:
Anti-Abortion
Anti-LGBT (even against civil unions)
"Repeal Obamacare" (whatever that means nowadays)
No way to legal citizenship for undocumented immigrants
Sounds quite Republican, so why "in name only"? In Germany's political spectrum, the first 3 mentioned issues combined would put her well into "radical right wing extremist" territory. The last one is quite mainstream within our conservative parties though.

(505 posts)According to Wikipedia, Karen Handel is the best R candidate for Ossoff to win the runoff:

4 out of 6 polls favor Ossoff in the Ossoff vs. Handel runoff
1 is tied
1 out of 6 favors Handel

(3) Trump's "trust and honesty" numbers will surely drop by the time the next election rolls around.

(18,086 posts)And the race will become fully nationalized. I don't see Ossoff winning the runoff, unfortunately. Republicans always always always fall in line in these situations. I would love to be wrong though and with any luck I will be. He's a great candidate but I think the best shot at this was to win it tonight.

(3,686 posts)Very little chance the democrats would be splitting off and voting repub. in a follow up election. Then look at it none of the repub's are even close percentage wise. So why would someone even go to toss in the towel before the elections are already over?

(16,104 posts)This 50/50 split just gave a lot more Republicans no reason to support repeal of "Obamacare"!

(100,326 posts)Worst case- Ossoff get 49%, Handel gets 18%.
I rather be in Ossoff's shoes as 49 is much closer to 50.

(16,104 posts)When this is over, you can bet the Republicans won't be looking for a third party or peevishly sitting at home for the runoff.

(100,326 posts)She has to get all of the remaining 33%. Ossoff only a smidgen.

(100,326 posts)I rather go to Vegas with 49 dollars and try to come home with 50 dollars than go to Vegas with 18 dollars and try to come home with 50 dollars.
I get it. Dems vote for Dems and Deplorables vote for Deplorables but the Deplorables have to be perfect.

(16,104 posts)Tom Price, our new Secretary of Health and Human Services, won the last 7 times. The Corrupt One won this district. Georgia is a Red state.
This is really Ossoff's best chance.
If it goes to a runoff, I'd stay out of Vegas with this bet.

(52,657 posts)One turnout in the runoff will be lower and the momentum seems to be on our side. Two, there were other Democrats than him on the list and thus the Dem vote tonight might wind up higher than the GOP vote, though it might not. Three, because of the nature of this race (only one of him and a bunch of them) nearly all of the attack ads were run against him that won't be true in a one on one race. It will be a heavy lift and I would rate his chances as a coin flip at best if there is a run off but for that district to be a coin flip is unreal. I was in elementary school when that district was last represented by a Democrat.

(20,659 posts)Will do a lot to benefit the voters of the 6th between now and then. Maybe we might even get a few arrests in the Russia scandal. There's hope.
I hope Ossof rents an apartment in the 6th, to take that whinge away.
