it's odious enough to abandon human rights as a policy objective.

but to *announce* it is to give a green light to violators of human rights.

indeed, it's nearly an *endorsement* of human rights violations.

Because by making it public the responsibility falls onto the shoulders of the American people! We now have a choice, either remove the Republican party from any access to power...or like "good Germans", allow them to continue and fall back on the excuse of how we didn't know!

And unfortunately marches and protests may not be enough anymore!!!

it's true that human rights has never been the overriding foreign policy objective, but by stating it as an objective and occasionally at least blaming some decisions on human rights issues, we put pressure on other countries to improve human rights globally.

by explicitly renouncing this as an objective, it's now open season and human rights abusers can now do so with the confidence that their actions will not adversely affect any negotiations with america, at least as long as republicans are in charge.
