A friend had a conversation with a hyperconserative at Starbucks. Sharing here:

My friend did not once use the frames of rights, or compassion regarding healthcare. Nope. Friend kept it in very selfish terms, using purity and patriotism. The person with whom discussing even tried to get me to divert from this to compassion.

Friend was frank and told him that is not in his core values. Friend actually had somebody who does not believe the state has a role in healthcare considering that it is a good thing. Will keep the sick from infecting him, a critical thing that matters to him (purity), it is patriotic, and it is fiscally conservative.

Law, as a positive value also came up.

This is how you do it. Forget about mushy values of caring for others, or the we.

Thank Professor Lakoff.

"give me a logical reason why I should have empathy" is not the way to kick off one's DU career!

I'd love to draw out more info from someone like that.

Like, do you have empathy for your Mom? your children?

He doesn't think that a childless person he should have to pay to educate other people's children. I maintain, as a childless person, that it is my best interest that ALL children should be educated so they can get good jobs, stay away from crime, and pay taxes to keep the country running.

He hasn't raised the subject since.

Asking some generals questions can help you get this information. Next, figure out how to pesent your idea so it is congruent with their world view. This slips the info into their brain without triggering those weird emotional responses to facts. Sales people do this all day long, as do good con men. Can it be considered manipulative? I guess, so what. It works. It works really, really well.
