Democrats Stumble Into Abortion Rift

Voters in Omaha, Nebraska, will pick a new mayor Tuesday in a local election that has become the epicenter of a divisive national Democratic fight over abortion.

The flareup started almost by accident, but has escalated through a series of heated comments and attempts at clarifying statements from Democratic leaders until it snowballed into an inquiry about whether the party should accommodate those who oppose abortion.

The issue was a hot topic among attendees at a fundraising gala last week in Washington, D.C., for Emily's List, which supports Democratic women who favor abortion rights. Some attendees felt passionately about the issue, while others said privately they felt the party had needlessly plunged into a tiff for no reason.

"I think there is [room for Democrats who don't support abortion rights], but I think they would have to be very nuanced in how they talk about these issues," Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth said. "The Democratic Party is a far bigger tent than the Republican Party is. And you will be given a fair choice to make your opinions heard. We have a full range of folks. But at the end of the day, it's about respecting each individual's rights, and that means you have to respect woman's rights."

While it's unclear if the row will have any long-term consequences, it underscores the difficulty the Democratic party has in speaking with one voice right now, despite its professed unity in battling the common enemy of President Donald Trump.

The abortion debate touched on many of the party's most sensitive spots, from the hard-fought 2016 presidential primary, to which kind of voters it should prioritize, and tradeoffs between focusing on economic or social issues.

Division over abortion, usually largely under the surface in the Democratic party, reared its head because of what amounts to a miscommunication.

and I state with with great despair as a woman who has devoted many years to the fight for reproductive freedom.
As soon as there is another SCOTUS seat open, as early as this summer, and the replacement is selected in the person of someone who will vote with the religious right, ROE is GONE!
The GOp has been promising this carrot to the extreme right for forty years and they will finally have to deliver, because they CAN and there is almost nothing else that they can so easily achieve.

However, once the carrot is gone all they will. have left is the stick and there will be a flood of voters who will be up for grabs, The Democrats want thos voters! Easy as that. It is a fact, It going to happen. Anti-choice voters will no longer exist because abortion will once again become illegal.

Think of all of the Catholics in the union and working class who have voted this single issue for a generation. The Democrats want that vote and they will go after it.
Young women will have to start over to re-assure their reproductive rights. Hard facts.

Ortega was turned out of office but got back into power by making an alliance with the church against women and girls.

The present and future for girls and women is now bleak in Nicaragua.

The total ban on all forms of abortion remained in force. Two thirds of rape victims whose cases were recorded between January and August 2009 were under 18.

...with many of them backstabbing the Democratic nominee for not being pure enough, in irrational hatred of all businesses and forms of making money - even being a paid headliner.

If you do that, but then get suddenly start playing footsie with sexists, the anti-choice movement, and/or people with racial resentments about perceived loss of white privilege, then many actual Democrats may start thinking you're throwing them under the bus.

I personally argue for a big tent. But here's the thing. The tent is either big, or it is small. You don't get to make it big for your friends and small for your rivals.
