For those saying "let us hear these tapes"...

...keep one thing in mind: this isn't the 1970s anymore. Any recording nowadays would be digital, and able to be edited on a simple computer running audio editing software like Adobe Audition or even the freeware Audacity. Just like digital photos can be manipulated via Photoshop into something that never happened, so a skilled audio editor can stitch together, not just syllables, but individual phonemes to make someone "say" something they never even thought. In fact, given a long-enough recording time of a given person in the same environment and with the same equipment (and, thus, enough examples of them speaking those various phonemes in a "controlled setting&quot , a good enough editor can pretty much get them to say whatever he or she wants them to have said.

So, this isn't Nixon Redux. There's a very real possibility that, if Trump boasts he has tapes, those have already been manipulated to serve as backup for his account of the story -- and that he may well have other tapes that "prove" he refused to bow to Russian demands, wasn't informed of Flynn until the very last day, etc., etc. We can't rely on tapes to bring him down -- unfortunately, the evidence nowadays is going to have to come from very different quarters.

1. I don't think Trump has any tapes

I believes he is insinuating the CIA or NSA is taping HIM and that they would release those tapes to discredit Comey. But as usual, he is lying, he doesn't believe he is being taped, but knows followers will believe it and that is all that counts.

I'm sure that a forensic review of any digital recording can determine whether or not it's been manipulated.

5. Yup. Forensics has advanced by leaps & bounds. Also, files are not truly erased.

The more computers / phones / tablets / laptops / internet routers / servers / drop-boxes used for digital nasty-work the more evidence.

Clearly, if you wanted to have recordings for accurate archival purposes, there are ways to embed signed time codes.

If a call or visit is ten minutes long, and the recording is five, that's simple too, unless they were meditating together.

10. Good points. I was thinking of office / shirt-pocket recordings done with smart phones

... aka pocket computers (they have phone apps too). They can be set to Record and slipped into upper suit / shirt pocket.

Don the Con might have recorded Comey at his little White House dinner tete-a-tete.

... and then littered copies on other devices without even being conscious he was doing so.

...but, rather, audio engineers and editors working on covert projects. And I'm sure Vlad has a whole bunch of them at the FSB available to be loaned to his buddies.

They might know a thing or two about evaluating those sort of things.
