The entire media including the internet is under threat to be taken over by the ultra right wing. I believe there is a conspiracy to install Trump. And the billionaires want to push a white supremacist nation and cause a divide they can exploit endlessly. The GOP leadership is in on the plan you can be sure of it.
The end of the O'Donnel program is probably just the beginning. Who else will be gone. Over the last 8 years the RW conspiracy has ended most of progressive radio. Many stations that were countering fascist propaganda were bought out and ended. The attack on the school system and the attack on the college institutions is about installing a fascist state. Anyone who is thought to be progressive is under attack.
The GOP will cooperate in wiping out the media. Their silence is a sign of collusion. The GOP is really intent on establishing a one party tyranny. And I think the situation is more serious than you think.

(1,947 posts)If it is classified as an "information service" instead of a "telecom service" then companies could offer only curated selections of what is available. It's not a simple matter of progressive sites having slower speeds. And, even with competition there would be areas of the country and large swaths of the population who might not have access to certain sites. Without an open internet social movements like Black Lives Matter, Occupy, and the Wisconsin protests would have had a hard time getting of the ground.
In the medium-term, it is likely that alternatives networks would be hobble together using satelite, radio, and microwave relays connecting to "free internet" networks such as municipal and academic networks. These have all been used in the past to extend the internet. But it would be a setback.

(10,481 posts)Imho, we are in the mess we're in because we allowed the 1%, bit by bit, to acquire 95% of traditional news media worldwide. They squeezed all the real journalists and objective analysts out. They have successfully used the control thus gained to shift public discussion dramatically rightward and, simply put, to manipulate us.
I've never understood Dems' lackadaisical attitude toward these encroachments.
Edited to add: And I concur with Blue Meany above re- the internet, only my hair's more on fire.
