Trump is toast. Pence is just as guilty as Trump, so he is on his way out, too. The Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan knew that Putin owned Trump, so he can't be the next president. Ditto for Sen. Mitch. Secretary of State Tillerson, aka Putin's BFF? Are you kidding? He is probably the mastermind of the whole Trump-Putin affair. So, who is next in line after Secretary of State? Secretary of the Treasury. That makes hedge fund manager, film producer, Frank-Dodd hating Steven Mnuchin the man most likely to be our next POTS.

(127,260 posts)If a President resigned, the VP would become Prez and would immediately appoint a new VP, who would be next in line (assuming a successful confirmation by the Senate) if the new Prez had to resign, and so on. That line of succession is assuming that both your top officials were out of office at the same time (or close enough not to be able to appoint a replacement in some reasonable amount of time).

The new president would NOMINATE a new VP, but that pick would need to be confirmed by both houses. That process would likely take months. I can't imagine a republican who would be amenable to both the moderate and the fringe in the House. More interesting might be what would happen if the resignation of the president happened after Democrats had taken control of the House. At that point, they could simply refuse to confirm ANYONE, and the new Speaker would be next in line.

(127,260 posts)and assuming this happened before the 2018 election, the GOP would make sure to get the process done asap - i.e., they would pull out every trick in the book to thwart any Democratic obstruction and will only need a majority (vs supermajority) to confirm (note the Senate has the closer break out between parties than the House and that would be the one needing the certainty for success - by party line).
