In the last week two people that I know who had ACA exchange policies for a couple of years now have received letters that they aren't being dropped, but that no further claims will be honored due to lack of funding.
Both of them are residents of Louisiana.
My cousin Mike, who has been very limited due to a hip injury back in his 20's, has hypertension, type 2 diabetes, low kidney function (not dialysis level but close at 30% function), and is a prostate cancer survivor was dropped last week. Personally, he and I stopped speaking since the dumb shit was a Trump supporter, but his wife and I remain friends on Facebook, and she was asking for some help.
Likewise, one of my younger brothers best friends also joined the exchange a few years ago, and is likewise not "dropped" but has received a letter advising that future claims will not be honored. This poor young man has more medical issues than I can begin to name.
I don't know if the 2 of them were with the same company on the Louisiana exchange or not, but was wondering if anyone else is starting to hear of situations like this? Or if this is just some small fluke isolated to something going on in one or two insurance companies in Louisiana.

(18,402 posts)It should be up to the state to make sure plans are available in their marketplace, if they run one. Some states don't and then people can use the federal marketplace to purchase a plan, I think. This is why we need a public option. When we get the House and Senate back, maybe.

(1,714 posts)With the dh retiring at the end of the year we need to go from employer-provided coverage to individual. Here (rural Michigan) we have the choice of two (silver) plans. One covers one of my two out-of-state docs, and the other covers neither. Our premium will be $1700.00/month, and we will have a $4500.00/person deductible. No matter what we would have been willing to spend, we couldn't have gotten a plan that would have completely met our needs, state, or federal marketplace. This is one of the shortcomings of the ACA--lack of choice.

(4,558 posts)All I know about my cousin's situation is what his wife passed on to me via facebook. Wonderful woman, but her ability to get details correct can be lacking. However she did describe it similar to my brothers friend.
For my brother's friend, the strange thing is he wasn't dropped, he's just been notified that further claims will not be honored. Since it's not during an enrollment period, and he has no other qualifiers for changing enrollment, he's out of luck in finding another policy on the exchange.

(51,567 posts)Keeping your fingers crossed and hope we don't get older and become sick (or get sicker in my case)is not an option but it seems that is what 45 and the GOP are suggesting for us to do. That and check out cemetery plots. My affairs have been in order since last Oct. I guess I am a realist and don't ever trust the greedy GOP sociopaths.

Humana is exiting the individual health insurance market but not until the end of 2017.
