It doesn't say 'unions' it says 'laborers'. Today, many "laborers" are immigrants.

A downside in the success the unions had in getting good wages and benefits for workers was
many turned into Republicans and the leaders became the 1%..

from both sides. Some cases where the workers really controlled the union, and a couple where the union leaders were out to line their own pockets. Kinda like politics.

When union membership was at its height it skewed left
NM, where Trump's "labor" rally is being held, has less than 4% union membership
