... In his campaign, President Trump promised the world to American workers, including a better and more generous health-care system. Having broken his health-care pledges, he now claims that he will live up to his vows on jobs and wages by cutting corporate taxes ...
If you want to know how old Trumps talking points are, consider a debate broadcast by CBS Radio on April 11, 1948, between Sen. Robert A. Taft .. and Walter Reuther .. leader of the United Automobile Workers union. (And .. wouldnt it be great if the media still broadcast debates of this sort?)
"Prosperity here depends upon a large percentage of the proceeds of our wealth being invested in new tools, new investments," Taft insisted. "It takes about six or seven thousand dollars to create one new job at good wages today." Those "job creators" have been central to the GOPs ideology for a long time.
Reuther was unpersuaded. "Unfortunately," he asserted, "most everything that Congress has done in the past six or eight months has moved in the direction of giving more to the people who already have too much and taking away from the people who need more" ...

(26,035 posts)I've always held that, while there's zero chance he can improve their lot economically, they'll continue to back him as long as it's clear that Mexicans and Muslims are getting treated even worse. His DACA repeal should be enough to cement their loyalty through 2018 -- especially if it comes with enough news footage of Dreamers being rounded up and dumped in Juarez.

(14,483 posts)I feel many middle and low income supporters will turn on him if - like most Rethugs - he hits them significantly at the cash register, or perhaps at tax time. Some screwed-up trade deals or a war gone wrong involving certain countries would do the trick.
They are hyper-conditioned to think in exactly the way you described.
There's been a lot of discussion on DU lately about how difficult it is to talk and reason with Rethugs. It just occurred to me that if one has the power to somehow affect their wallet, most will get down and beg on their knees - no matter what your political affiliation. That's my experience with several I've known.
