I wrote this letter to my Congresspeople about DACA

My ancestor, James XXX, landed at what is now Boston on board the Lyon on Sept 16, 1632. He later founded Hartford, CT. Through him, I'm 16th generation born in America. In the 16 generations the XXXs have been here, many immigrants joined our family. Some of the most recent ones are below.

My grandmother was first generation born on American soil, the daughter of Black Sea Germans who came to the Dakotas in the early 1900's. Her older brothers, my 15th generation born in the US father's uncles, were not born here. The son of one of those uncles served as a "top gun" navigator and trainer stationed at Miramar and retired after a 20 year career in the Navy. Her father grew winter wheat for the US military during WWI.

On the other side, both grandparents came from Ireland during the Great Potato Famine or shortly thereafter. My great grandfather fought in the Civil War. His oldest son retired as a Major General of the US Army, his second son (XXXX) retired as a General of the Army and served as the Army Chief of Staff during the Korean War, and his grandson is (still alive!) XXXX, a retired USAF Major General.

I am the descendant of immigrants, none of whom came here with "papers." Donald Trump's order to end DACA is a deeply unAmerican order which is a violation of the values that made this country great. Congress's failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform, including codifying the DACA into law, making it easier for immigrants to come to the US, and providing a path to citizenship for hard working immigrants who are already here is a disgrace. It is not merely partisan and mean spirited, it is bad for the economy.

If this had been happening in the 1930's, it would have only been the lucky chance that my grandmother was the one born here that kept me safe. My father's cousin would not have been able to serve and train the next generation to serve.

I would like you to make it a top priority to pass fair and reasonable comprehensive immigration reform. At the very least, I want to see you sponsor and work to get passed the Dream Act during the next session.

I would like to hear what you are going to do about this.

Sincerely,
drmeow
